Wednesday 17 March 2021: Evening Prayer
GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51: 17

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
Behold, now is the acceptable time;
now is the day of salvation.
Turn us again, O God of our salvation,
that the light of your face may shine on us.
May your justice shine like the sun;
and may the poor be lifted up.

PENITENCE
Silent prayer / reflection on the past day.
Loving God,
We remember in this season of Lent the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness,
the pressures he faced,
the choices he had to make,
the evil he had to resist,
the path he chose.
We remember that though he was tempted as we are
he did not give way,
though he could have used his powers for his own ends
he used them instead for us,
though he could have taken the easy way
he took the hard.
Loving God,
Forgive us that our testimony is all too often so different.
We have failed you in so much,
refusing to take up our cross
and follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
We have not obeyed your commandments,
or loved as you have loved us,
or in any way lived faithfully as your people.
We have been narrow in our vision,
weak in our commitment,
careless in our worship,
self-centred in our attitudes,
repeatedly preferring our way to yours
and wandering far from you.
Loving God,
Have mercy upon us.
Renew us in heart and mind and spirit,
strengthen our wills and deepen our faith,
and send us out once more as your people,
forgiven and restored,
to live and work for you, in the name of Christ.
Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD
A PSALM
Psalm 135
Refrain: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
Alleluia.
Praise the name of the Lord; ♦︎
give praise, you servants of the Lord,
You that stand in the house of the Lord, ♦︎
in the courts of the house of our God.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; ♦︎
make music to his name, for it is lovely.
For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself ♦︎
and Israel for his own possession.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
For I know that the Lord is great ♦︎
and that our Lord is above all gods.
The Lord does whatever he pleases
in heaven and on earth, ♦︎
in the seas and in all the deeps.
He brings up the clouds from the ends of the earth; ♦︎
he makes lightning with the rain
and brings the winds out of his treasuries.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
He smote the firstborn of Egypt, ♦︎
the firstborn of man and beast.
He sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, ♦︎
upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
He smote many nations ♦︎
and slew mighty kings:
Sihon, king of the Amorites,
and Og, the king of Bashan, ♦︎
and all the kingdoms of Canaan.
He gave their land as a heritage, ♦︎
a heritage for Israel his people.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
Your name, O Lord, endures for ever ♦︎
and shall be remembered through all generations.
For the Lord will vindicate his people ♦︎
and have compassion on his servants.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, ♦︎
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak; ♦︎
eyes have they, but cannot see;
They have ears, but cannot hear; ♦︎
neither is there any breath in their mouths.
Those who make them shall become like them, ♦︎
and so will all who put their trust in them.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
Bless the Lord, O house of Israel; ♦︎
O house of Aaron, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, O house of Levi; ♦︎
you who fear the Lord, bless the Lord.
Blessed be the Lord from Zion, ♦︎
who dwells in Jerusalem. Alleluia.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.
Psalm-Prayer
Wise and gracious God,
save us from the idols of our hearts
and keep us in your living presence,
that we may become a people for your praise
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A READING
Mark 12: 18-27
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher,
Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow
and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no
children; and the second married her and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; none of the seven
left children. Last of all the woman herself died. In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had
married her.’
Jesus said to them, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power
of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in
heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the
bush, how God said to him, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is
God not of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.’

ADDRESS
INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVINGS
Let us pray for the forgiveness of God
and for his saving power to be manifest in our lives.

INTERCESSIONS
Jesus the Christ,
you refused to turn stones into bread.
Save us from using our power,
however little,
to satisfy the demands of selfishness
in the face of the greater needs of others.
Jesus the Christ,
you refused to leap from the temple top.
Save us from displaying our skills,
however modest,
to win instant popularity
in the face of nobler calls on our abilities.
Jesus the Christ,
you refused to bend the knee to a false god.
Save us from offering our devotion,
however weak,
to cheap or easy religion
in the face of the harder path
on which you bid us to follow you.
Jesus the Christ,
give us wisdom to discern evil,
and in the face of all that is deceptively attractive
help us to choose the will of God. Amen.

THANKSGIVINGS
Gracious God,
we thank you that you are a God
who sees not the outside but the inside,
a God who is not taken in by external appearances
but who looks into the inner depths of our heart and soul.
We thank you for the reassurance which that brings,
the confidence we can have
that, though we repeatedly disobey you,
consistently breaking your commandments
and failing to live as you have called us to,
still you know that we earnestly desire to be your people,
that we long to be better disciples of Christ.
For your unfailing mercy,
receive our thanks.
We thank you that you see not merely the end product
but the initial intention,
not just the final results
but the desire that precedes it.
But we recognise also the challenge that truth brings,
for we know that we can never deceive you with outward show.
Though our lives may appear blameless,
our faith strong,
our works good
and our words right,
you and you alone know the reality in our hearts,
the truth beneath.
For your unfailing mercy,
receive our thanks.
Gracious God,
help us not just to lift up our hands but our hearts,
not just our voices but our souls.
Fill us with the power of your Spirit
and the love of Christ,
so that we may become more like the people
you would have us to be.
For your unfailing mercy,
receive our thanks.
May we resist evil, repent, return to the Lord
and proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom.
For the sake of the one who became sin for us,
Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

COLLECT
Take all our doubts and uncertainties, O God,
and fill us with such faith
that we may be confident of your love
and loyal in the service of him
who died and yet lives for us,
Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Our Father, who art in heaven:
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
for ever and ever. Amen.

THE ENDING
DISMISSAL
May God our Redeemer show us compassion and love. Amen.

BLESSING
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent
(Mothering Sunday)

SERVICE OF THE WORD
Preparation

GREETING
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all
and also with you.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.
1 John 3:1

INVITATION TO WORSHIP
On Mothering Sunday, many of us thank God for the women who have had the greatest impact on our
lives, and celebrate their unconditional love and sacrifice.
For others, however, Mothering Sunday brings mixed emotions, and it can take real tenacity and trust in
the Holy Spirit to give love and to feel loved.
So, in this service we remember before God families of all kinds, as they navigate the joys and challenges
of family life, and ask for his blessing upon them.
We draw near in worship to our heavenly Father, with full and thankful hearts, that we belong to his
family and are all equally loved by him. Amen.
Hymn of Praise: Thanks & Praise 28 “Come, thou fount of every blessing”
Come, thou fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious measure
sung by flaming tongues above;
O the vast, the boundless treasure
of my Lord’s unchanging love.
Here I find my greatest treasure;
‘Hither by thy help I’ve come’,
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to save my soul from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
take my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
Robert Robinson (1735-90), altd.

OPENING PRAYERS
Wherever we are, we live in God’s family.
When our families are broken by circumstance and pain,
He reaches out to hold us in His arms, piece by piece
He makes us whole again,
and in His love-filled hands we are transformed.
So Lord, help us to build relationships
in all the corners of our hearts.
To be like you, to love like you,
to heal brokenness and restore wholeness
in families worldwide. Amen

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
God of compassion,
whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,
shared the life of a home in Nazareth,
and on the cross, drew the whole human family to himself:
strengthen us in our daily living
that in joy and in sorrow
we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.
Ministry of the Word

The First Reading: 1 Samuel 1: 20-28
In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of
the Lord.’
The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his
vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring
him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a
nazirite for all time.’ Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Do what seems best to you, wait until you have
weaned him; only—may the Lord establish his word.’ So the woman remained and nursed her son, until
she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child
was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, ‘Oh, my lord!
As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For
this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him
to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.’
She left him there for the Lord.

Psalm: Psalm 127: 1-4
Unless the Lord builds the house, ♦︎
those who build it labour in vain.
Unless the Lord keeps the city, ♦︎
the guard keeps watch in vain.
It is in vain that you hasten to rise up early
and go so late to rest, eating the bread of toil, ♦︎
for he gives his beloved sleep.
Children are a heritage from the Lord ♦︎
and the fruit of the womb is his gift.

The Second Reading: Colossians 3: 12-17
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive
each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with
love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Hymn before the Gospel: Thanks & Praise 13 “Beneath the cross of Jesus”
Beneath the cross of Jesus
I find a place to stand;
and wonder at such mercy
that calls me as I am.
For hands that should discard me,
hold wounds which tell me ‘Come’.
Beneath the cross of Jesus,
my unworthy soul is won.
Beneath the cross of Jesus
his family is my own;
once strangers chasing selfish dreams,
now one through grace alone.
How could I now dishonour
the ones that you have loved?
Beneath the cross of Jesus
see the children called by God.
Beneath the cross of Jesus
the path before the crown,
we follow in his footsteps
where promised hope is found.
How great the joy before us –
to be his perfect bride.
Beneath the cross of Jesus,
we will gladly live our lives.
Keith Getty (b. 1974)
and Kristyn Getty (b. 1980)

The Gospel: John 19: 25-27
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of
Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing
beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your
mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

SERMON
THE COLLECT OF THE WORD
God of mercies,
your only Son, while hanging on the cross,
appointed Mary, his mother,
to be his beloved disciple’s mother.
May we follow her good example
and always care for others
for the sake of Jesus Christ
our Saviour through whose name we pray. Amen.

Hymn: CH472 “Sing we of the blessèd mother”
Sing we of the blessèd mother who received the angel’s word,
and obedient to his summons bore in love the infant Lord;
Sing we of the joys of Mary at whose breast that child was fed
who is Son of God eternal and the everlasting Bread.
Sing we, too, of Mary’s sorrows, of the sword that pierced her through,
when beneath the cross of Jesus she his weight of suffering knew,
looked upon her Son and Saviour reigning high on Calvary’s tree,
saw the price of our redemption paid to set the sinner free.
Sing again the joys of Mary when she saw the risen Lord,
and in prayer with Christ’s apostles, waited on his promised word;
from on high the blazing glory of the Spirit’s presence came,
heavenly breath of God’s own being, manifest through wind and flame.
Sing the chiefest joy of Mary when on earth her work was done,
and the Lord of all creation brought her to his heavenly home:
where raised high with saints and angels, in Jerusalem above,
she beholds her Son and Saviour reigning as the Lord of love.
George Timms (1910-97) altd.
Response

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended to heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

THE MOTHERS’ UNION
Jessica Clarke and Sally Smith tell us about some Mothers’ Union projects.

MOTHERS’ UNION PRAYER
Loving Lord, we thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union as it seeks to share your love
through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

PRAISING AND THANKING GOD
We praise you, our God, for all mothers who have loved and laughed and laboured as they cared for their
children.
Blessed be God for ever.
We praise you, our God, for all mothers who have wept in sorrow and joy for their children.
Blessed be God for ever.
We praise you, our God, for Jesus, born of a woman and nurtured in her love, and for Mary, a reminder of
your patient, waiting love.
Blessed be God for ever.

REFLECTIVE PRAYER
We take a moment after every section to bring our own response to God and to remember those we know
for whom it is particularly relevant.
God of celebration, who rejoices with those who rejoice,
we pray for those for whom Mothering Sunday
is a time of thanksgiving and joy.

Silence
God of compassion, who weeps with those who weep,
we pray for those for whom Mothering Sunday
is a time of heartache and pain.

Silence
God of community, who calls the children to come to him,
we thank you that your love abounds
for families of every kind.

Silence
God of comfort, who gathers us as a hen gather its chicks,
we thank you that your love surrounds
the disappointed and hurt.

Silence
God of every circumstance, we bring our thanks and praise
that we belong to your family
as your beloved children. Amen.

PENITENCE
Remember that our Lord Jesus Christ is able
to sympathize with us in our weaknesses.
In every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness,
so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Let us confess our sins to Almighty God.
Holy and merciful God,
we confess to you and to one another,
and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth,
that we have sinned by our own fault
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength.
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, O God.
We have not listened to your call to serve as Christ served us.
We have not been true to the mind of Christ.
We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, O God.
For our neglect of human need and suffering
and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
accept our repentance, O God.
For all false judgments,
for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbours,
and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us,
accept our repentance, O God.
For our waste and pollution of your creation
and our lack of concern for those who come after us,
accept our repentance, O God.
Merciful Lord,
you know our struggle to serve you:
when sin spoils our lives and overshadows our hearts,
come to our aid and turn us back to you again;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing Hymn: 543 “Lord of the home”
Lord of the home, your only Son
received a mother’s tender care,
and from an earthly father won
his vision of your home above.
Help us, O Lord, our homes to make
your Holy Spirit’s dwelling-place;
our hands and hearts’ devotion take
to be the servants of your grace.
May we with joy our homes prepare
that, were our Lord a child once more,
he might be glad our hearth to share,
and find a welcome at our door.
Lord, may your Spirit sanctify
each household duty we fulfil;
may we our Master glorify
in glad obedience to your will.
Albert F Bayly (1901-84) altd.

 GREETING

Welcome in the name of Christ. God’s grace, mercy, and peace be with you.

And also with you.

 PREPARATION

Creator of the world, eternal God,

We have come from many places for a little while.

Redeemer of humanity, God-with-us,

We have come with all our differences, seeking common ground.

Spirit of unity, ever present God,

We have come on journeys of our own, to a place where journeys meet.

So here, let us take time together. For when paths cross and pilgrims gather, there is much to share and celebrate.

In your name, Holy Trinity, pattern of community. Amen.

 PENITENCE

The divisions brought about by human sin and pride are matters of great sorrow for us all. Therefore let us confess our sins, and ask for God’s forgiveness and guidance

Silence is kept

 God be merciful and bless us, and make his face to shine upon us.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May your ways be known on earth, your saving power to all nations.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

You, Lord, have made known your salvation, and reveal your justice in the sight of the nations.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

 The almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

 VERSICLES AND RESPONSES

O Lord, open our lips

and our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Praise the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

 THE WORD OF GOD

 A READING

St. John 8:12-20

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’ Then the Pharisees said to him, ‘You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid.’ Jesus answered, ‘Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I judge no one. Yet even if I do judge, my judgement is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf.’ Then they said to him, ‘Where is your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.’ He spoke these words while he was teaching in the treasury of the temple, but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

ADDRESS

ANTHEM

Drop, drop, slow tears,

and bathe those beauteous feet,

which brought from heaven

the news and Prince of Peace.

Cease not, wet eyes,

his mercies to entreat;

to cry for vengeance

sin doth never cease.

In your deep flood

drown all my faults and fears;

not let his eye see sin,

but through my tears.

Orlando Gibbons

We pray to you our God.

That you will sustain the faith and hope of those who are lonely, oppressed and anxious; in faith we pray

We pray to you our God.

 That you will strengthen us in your service, and fill our hearts with longing for your kingdom; in faith we pray

We pray to you our God.

SERVICE OF MORNING PRAYER
The Gathering of God’s People

GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

Opening Hymn: CH336 “Jesus, where’er thy people meet”
Jesus, where’er thy people meet,
there they behold thy mercy-seat;
where’er they seek thee, thou art found,
and every place is hallowed ground.
For thou, within no walls confined,
inhabitest the humble mind;
such ever bring thee where they come,
and going, take thee to their home.
Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few,
thy former mercies here renew;
here to our waiting hearts proclaim
the sweetness of thy saving name.
Here may we prove the power of prayer
to strengthen faith and sweeten care,
to teach our faint desires to rise,
and bring all heaven before our eyes.
Lord, we are few, but thou art near;
nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear;
O rend the heavens, come quickly down,
and make a thousand hearts thine own!
William Cowper (1731-1800)

INTRODUCTION
Beloved in Christ,
we come together to offer to Almighty God
our worship and praise and thanksgiving,
to confess our sins and to receive God’s forgiveness,
to hear his holy word proclaimed,
to bring before him our needs and the needs of the world,
and to pray that in the power of his Spirit
we may serve him and know the greatness of his love.

The First Reading: Exodus 20: 1-17
Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall
have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is
on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship
them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the
third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth
generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone
who misuses his name.
Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the
seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your
daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days
the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the
Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is
giving you.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female
slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.
After the reading silence may be kept.

First Canticle: CH698 “Jesus, Saviour of the world”
Jesus, Saviour of the world,
Come to us in mercy.
Hear us as we pray to you,
Help and heal us, Jesus.
By your cross and life laid down
you have freed your people.
In the greatness of your love
heal us in our weakness.
Saviour and Deliverer,
help us all to praise you.
Jesus, come and dwell with us;
hear us now and always;
and when you in glory come,
may we share your kingdom.
Edward F Darling (b. 1933)
based on the Canticle ‘Jesus, Saviour of the World’

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence is kept.
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Proclaiming and Receiving the Word
O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

Hymn of Praise: Thanks & Praise 5 “All heaven declares”
All heaven declares the glory of the risen Lord.
Who can compare with the beauty of the Lord?
Forever he will be the Lamb upon the throne.
I gladly bow the knee and worship him alone.
I will proclaim the glory of the risen Lord,
who once was slain to reconcile man to God.
Forever you will be the Lamb upon the throne.
I gladly bow the knee and worship You alone.
Noel Richards (b. 1955)
and Tricia Richards (b. 1960)

The Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 18-25
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it
is the power of God. For it is written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made
foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through
wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews
demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God
and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is
stronger than human strength.
After the reading silence may be kept.

Second Canticle: BENEDICTUS The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68-79
1 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
2 And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us
in the house of his servant David;
3 As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets
which have been since the world began;
4 That we should be saved from our enemies,
and from the hands of all that hate us,
5 To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers,
and to remember his holy covenant;
6 To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham:
that he would give us,
7 That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies
might serve him without fear,
8 In holiness and righteousness before him
all the days of our life.
9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest,:
for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
10 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people,
for the remission of their sins,
11 Through the tender mercy of our God
whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
12 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Gospel: John 2: 13-22
The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling
cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove
all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of
here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal
for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’
Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This
temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was
speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he
had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
After the reading silence may be kept.

THE SERMON
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Show us your mercy, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
O Lord, guide and defend our rulers
and grant our government wisdom.
Let your ministers be clothed with righteousness
and let your servants shout for joy.
O Lord, save your people
and bless those whom you have chosen.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
and let your glory be over all the earth.
O God, make clean our hearts within us
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

THE COLLECTS
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Merciful Lord,
Grant your people grace to withstand the temptations
of the world, the flesh and the devil
and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE SEASON
Almighty and everlasting God,
you hate nothing that you have made
and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent:
Create and make in us new and contrite hearts
that we, worthily lamenting our sins
and acknowledging our wretchedness,
may receive from you, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECTS AT MORNING PRAYER
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life, and to serve you is perfect freedom:
Defend us in all assaults of our enemies,
that we, surely trusting in your protection,
may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everliving God,
we give you thanks for bringing us safely to this day:
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
and in all things guide us to know and do your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

EXAMINING OURSELVES
Almighty and all-seeing God,
We thank you for this season of Lent –
a time to reflect upon our discipleship
to consider our calling,
to test ourselves and see whether we are in the faith.
Almighty God,
help us to face all those things
which we usually prefer to push aside –
the unpleasant truths we sweep under the carpet,
pretending they are not there.
All-seeing God,
we can fool ourselves
but we cannot fool you.
We can pretend all is well
but cannot conceal our inner pain.
We can deny our need of you
but cannot disguise our emptiness without you.
We can seek fulfilment in this world
but will never find real peace outside your love.
Almighty and all-seeing God,
we claim to be in the faith
but sometimes that faith is skin-deep.
We claim to love you
but often that love is flawed.
We claim to serve you
but all too frequently we serve self first.
Search us and help us to search ourselves,
control us, and help us to control ourselves,
and give us grace to grow strong in faith
and whole in Christ,
for in his name we ask it,
Amen.

Closing Hymn: CH487 “Soldiers of Christ, arise”
Soldiers of Christ, arise,
and put your armour on,
strong in the strength which God supplies
through His eternal Son.
strong in the Lord of hosts,
and in his mighty power:
who in the strength of Jesus trusts
is more than conqueror.
Stand then in His great might,
with all His strength endued,
and take, to arm you for the fight,
the panoply of God.
To keep your armour bright,
attend with constant care,
still walking in your Captain’s sight
and watching unto prayer.
From strength to strength go on;
wrestle and fight and pray;
tread all the powers of darkness down,
and win the well-fought day;
that, having all things done,
and all your conflicts passed,
ye may o’ercome, through Christ alone,
and stand complete at last.

Going Out as God’s People
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The God of mercy
transform you by his grace
and give you strength to overcome temptation;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be with you and remain with you always. Amen.

EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 3rd March 2021

The Greeting

The Lord be with you.                         And also with you.

Introduction

 We have come together in the name of Christ

To offer our praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive God’s holy word,

to seek the forgiveness of our sins, and to pray for the needs of the world,

that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we may give ourselves to the service of God.

O Lord open our lips,                                          and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the Lord,                                     All praise to his name.

 Blessed are you, Lord God of our salvation, to you be glory and praise for ever.                                                               In the darkness of our sin you have shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge                                           of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Open our eyes to acknowledge your presence, that freed from the misery of sin and shame, we may grow into your likeness from glory to glory.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.                  Blessed be God for ever.

 Penitence

God our Father, we come to you in sorrow for our sins.

For turning away from you and ignoring your will for our lives;

Father, forgive us:               save us and help us.

For behaving just as we wish, without thinking of you;

Father, forgive us:               save us and help us.

For failing you by what we do, and think and say;

Father, forgive us:               save us and help us.

For letting ourselves be drawn away from you

by temptations in the world about us;

Father, forgive us:               save us and help us.

For living as if we were ashamed to belong to your Son;

Father, forgive us:               save us and help us.

May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins,  and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord.               Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

Psalm 105 1 -11

O give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples.
Sing to him, sing praises, and tell of all his marvellous works.
Rejoice in the praise of his holy name; let the hearts of them rejoice who seek the Lord.

Seek the Lord and his strength;  seek his face continually.

Remember the marvels he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth,
O seed of Abraham, his servant, O children of Jacob his chosen.
He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

He has always been mindful of his covenant, the promise that he made for a thousand generations,
 9 The covenant he made with Abraham, the oath that he swore to Isaac,

10 which he established as a statute for Jacob, an everlasting covenant for Israel,
11  Saying “To you will I give the land of Canaan, to be the portion of your inheritence.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle – Nunc Dimittis

Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled.   My own eyes have seen the salvation; which you have prepared in the sight of every people, A light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading John: 12 verses 36 – 45

While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them.

Although he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him.  This was to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

“Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

And so they could not believe, because Isaiah also said,

“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not look with their eyes, and understand with their heart and turn and I would heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him.

Nevertheless many, even of the authorities, believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.

Few thoughts

The Response to God’s Word

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, who made the world?

I believe and trust in him

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ, who redeemed mankind?

I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God?

I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith. we believe and trust in One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Prayers of the People.

With confidence and trust let us pray to the Father.

For the one holy catholic and apostolic Church …
Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

For the mission of the Church, that in faithful witness it may preach the gospel to the ends of the earth,.
Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

For peace in the world … thinking especially of the people in Myanmar,

that a spirit of respect and reconciliation may grow among nations and peoples.
Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

 For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer … thinking particularly of those affected by the global pandemic,  for refugees, prisoners, and all in danger; that they may be relieved and protected.

Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

 For grace to amend our lives and to further the reign of God,

Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

In communion with all those who have walked in the way of holiness … .
Lord of compassion,                            in your mercy hear us.

God our Father, in your love and goodness, you have taught us to come close to you, in penitence with prayer, fasting and generosity; accept our Lenten discipline, and when we fall by our weakness, raise us up by your unfailing mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                     Amen.

God, remember us in your love and teach us to pray –

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

Going Out as God’s People

Let us give thanks to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit:                                                                                                                                                                                           For the love of our Father, the maker of all, the giver of all good things,  For Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lived and worked among us, For the Holy Spirit, the giver of life, who teaches us and guides us, For the grace of the Spirit in the work of the Church and the life of the world,

Let us bless the Lord.                          Thanks be to God. Amen.

Dismissal

Let us say together: We go into the world to walk in God’s light, to rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory.

 The Blessing

Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves,
and to take up your cross and follow him and the blessing of God Almighty,  the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always.        Amen.

Easter

My mother woke us that Sunday –

her voice a bell proclaiming spring.

We rose diving into our clothes, newly bought.

We took turns standing before mirrors,

combing, staring at our new selves.

Sinless from forty days of desert,

sinless from good confessions,

we drove to church in a red pickup,

bright and red and waxed for the special occasion.

Clean, polished as apples,

the yellow-dressed girls in front with Mom and Dad;

the boys in back, our hair blowing free in the warming wind.

Winter gone away.

At Mass, the choir singing loud:

ragged notes from ragged angel’s voices;

ancient hymns sung in crooked Latin.

The priest, white robed, raised his palms toward God,

opened his mouth in awe: “Alleluia!”

The unspoken word of Lent let loose in flight.

Alleluia and incense rising,

my mother wiping her tears from words she’d heard;

my brother and I whispering names of statues

lining the walls of the church.

Bells ringing, Mass ending,

we running to the truck, shiny as shoes going dancing.

Dad driving us to see my grandmother.

There, at her house, I asked about the new word I’d heard: resurrection. “Death, death,” she said, her hands moving downward,

“the cross – that is death.”

And then she laughed: “The dead will rise.”

Her upturned palms moved skyward as she spoke.

“The dead will rise.”

She moved her hands toward me,

wrapped my face with touches, and laughed again.

The dead will rise.

Green Technology

The current pandemic will probably result in financial hardship for years to come and many companies will struggle to survive. Green technology is playing a pivotal role as investors and consumers alike clamour for sustainability; companies are responding, by reducing waste, pollution and carbon emissions. Those companies with better green credentials are likely to come out of the pandemic least scathed as investors are aware that climate risk is financial risk. In the circular economy, businesses aim to eliminate carbon emissions and waste by re-using products in a cycle, rather than producing them with disposal as the end point. From small, localised companies to international giants, huge strides are being made in becoming more sustainable, for example: Galway-based Paltech, a polymer engineering company transforming waste plastics into high quality products; Coca-Cola reducing its use of plastic each year, aiming for 100% recycling of its products and a World Without Waste by 2030. Research is ongoing into developing new sources of energy; wind and solar provide some, but not in sufficient amounts. Hydrogen is expensive but as the industry scales up, so costs will come down, especially important for green rather than grey Hydrogen – this will be needed for heavy transport, shipping, industrial processes and heating.

Lenten Reflections

Diocesan Lay Readers are continuing their series of short Lenten Reflections entitled “Walking with Jesus in the wilderness”.  The Archbishop commenced the series on Ash Wednesday and Diocesan Readers will give daily reflections for the weekdays of Lent up to and including Maundy Thursday. These will be shown on the Diocesan YouTube channel which may be found at

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJQH1IpNHCI2ue7S782OlFw

and a link is provided via the Parish Facebook page.

In addition, the Archbishop will be giving a talk each Sunday in Lent. On Good Friday, the plan is to have reflections from seven perspectives entitled “Living with Jesus Christ in the city of Jerusalem” based on the narrative of the Passion.

Something Different for Lent

“Something Different for Lent” has been designed as a collection of short prayers, reflections and exercises for busy people to help aid us on our journeys through Lent to Easter. We are encouraged to use this for 5-15 mins out each day as we prepare for Easter. It can be downloaded from the parish website. Each week Revd Ken plans to introduce the resource for the week and this will be posted on the Facebook page.

Lectio Divina

On Thursday evenings at 7.30pm, Sr Pauline McGrath of the Dominican Convent in Wicklow organises Lectio Divina sessions which focus on the Gospel for the following Sunday. Lectio Divina is a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of’s word. The emphasis is on listening to what God is saying to us through the Scripture reading. If interested, Revd Ken can provide a zoom link.
