THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

The Gathering of God’s People

THE GREETING
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all
and also with you.

Opening Hymn: CH59 “New every morning is the love”(vs 1-3, 5, 6)
New every morning is the love
our wakening and uprising prove;
through sleep and darkness safely brought,
restored to life and power and thought.
New mercies, each returning day,
hover around us while we pray;
new perils past, new sins forgiven,
new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
If on our daily course, our mind
be set to hallow all we find,
new treasures still, of countless price,

INTRODUCTION
We have come together in the name of Christ
to offer our praise and thanksgiving,
to hear and receive God’s holy word,
to seek the forgiveness of our sins,
and to pray for the needs of the world,
that by the power of the Holy Spirit
we may give ourselves to the service of God.
O Lord, open our lips,
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
Let us worship the Lord.
All praise to his name.
Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
In the darkness of our sin,

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

The First Reading: Genesis 17: 1-7, 15-16
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God
Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and
will make you exceedingly numerous.’ Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, ‘As for me, this
is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name
be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I
will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will
establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for
an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
God said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I
will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to

The Second Reading: Romans 4: 13-25
For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through
the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith
is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there
violation.
For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his
descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he
is the father of all of us, as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of
the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not
exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to
what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’ He did not weaken in faith when he considered
his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he
considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God,
but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do
what he had promised. Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ Now the words, ‘it was
reckoned to him’, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who
believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses
and was raised for our justification.

The Gospel Reading: Mark 8: 31-38
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the
elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite
openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he
rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on
human things.’
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them
deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it,
and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it
profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their
life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the
Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’.

COLLECT OF THE WORD
God of all times and places,

Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God,

A READING
Matthew 4: 1-11

“One does not live by bread alone,

THE FITST SUNDAY IN LENT

Opening Hymn: Thanks & Praise 27 “Come, sing the praise of Jesus”
Come sing the praise of Jesus,
sing his love with hearts aflame,
sing his wondrous birth of Mary
when to save the world he came;
tell the life he lived for others,
and his mighty deeds proclaim,
for Jesus Christ is King.
Praise and glory be to Jesus,

praise and glory be to Jesus,
for Jesus Christ is King!
There’s joy for all who serve Him,
more than human tongue can say;
there is pardon for the sinner,

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful

A LESSON
from the Old Testament

Genesis 9: 8-17
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, ‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your
descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every
animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’

A LESSON
from the New Testament
1 Peter 3: 18-22
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was
put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. Mark 1: 9-15
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. SERVICE FOR ASH WEDNESDAY: THE BEGINNING OF LENT

The Gathering of God’s People

The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart you will not despise.

Lord, have mercy.

In these or other suitable words, the presiding minister explains the meaning of Lent and invites the people to observe it faithfully.

Brothers and sisters in Christ: since the early days Christians have observed with great devotion the time of our Lord’s passion and resurrection. It became the custom of the Church to prepare for this by a season of penitence and fasting.

At first this season of Lent was observed by those who were preparing for baptism at Easter and by those who were to be restored to the Church’s fellowship from which they had been separated through sin. In course of time the Church came to recognize that, by a careful keeping of these days, all Christians might take to heart the call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel and so grow in faith and in devotion to our Lord.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Lord to observe a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.

The Liturgy of Penitence

Let us now call to mind our sin and the infinite mercy of God.

Make our hearts clean, O God,

In the Gospels we are told that Jesus frequently goes away to a quiet place to pray, to escape the crowds, to spend time with God – even just to refuel the tanks! With the pull of work, family, commitments, even with the best intentions, this can be hard to find – even an envied luxury!!

We are encouraged to take 5-15 mins out each day as our gift to ourselves as we prepare for Easter.

INTRODUCTION
Transfiguration is a celebration that affirms the identity of Jesus as not only fully human but
also fully divine. It prepares us for the journey toward the cross and empty tomb.
On this day, we recall how Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor. Let us mystically behold
him whom God the Father proclaimed as his well-beloved Son. As we worship together, may we
learn to listen to him and so be transformed and directed anew to heavenly things.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Great is the Lord — exalted among the nations.
Mighty is the Lord — King of heaven and earth.
Holy is the Lord — beyond our understanding.
Let us worship our God and King!

Ministry of the Word
Old Testament Reading: 2 Kings 2: 1-12
Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha
were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far
as Bethel.’ But Elisha said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So
they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and
said to him, ‘Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?’ And he
said, ‘Yes, I know; keep silent.’
Elijah said to him, ‘Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.’ But he said, ‘As the
Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they came to Jericho. The company
of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, ‘Do you know that today
the Lord will take your master away from you?’ And he answered, ‘Yes, I know; be silent.’
Then Elijah said to him, ‘Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.’ But he said, ‘As the
Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So the two of them went on. Fifty men
of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were
standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the
water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken
from you.’ Elisha said, ‘Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.’ He responded, ‘You
have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you;
if not, it will not.’ As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire
separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching
and crying out, ‘Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ But when he could no
longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

The Epistle: 2 Corinthians 4: 3-6
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of
this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the
gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we
proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who
said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
O Lord our God,
you are great indeed,
clothed in majesty and splendour,
wrapped in light as with a robe.

A READING
John 3: 22-36
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there
with them and baptized. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant
there; and people kept coming and were being baptized— John, of course, had not yet been thrown
into prison.
Now a discussion about purification arose between John’s disciples and a Jew. They came to John
and said to him, ‘Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he
is baptizing, and all are going to him.’ John answered, ‘No one can receive anything except what has
been given from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, “I am not the Messiah, but I

INTRODUCTION
Beloved in Christ,
we come together to offer to Almighty God
our worship and praise and thanksgiving,

The Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 3: 1-6
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Surely we do not need, as some do, letters of
recommendation to you or from you, do we? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be
known and read by all; and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink
but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
Such is the confidence that we have through Christ towards God. Not that we are competent of ourselves
to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God, who has made us competent to be
ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

GREETING

Welcome in the name of Christ. God’s grace, mercy, and peace be with you.

And also with you.

PREPARATION

Through Christ let us offer our sacrifice of praise to God.

Let our lips proclaim his praise.

Let our prayers rise up before God like incense.

Let our lifted hands be like an evening sacrifice.

PENITENCE

The divisions brought about by human sin and pride are matters of great sorrow for us all. Therefore let us confess our sins, and ask for God’s forgiveness and guidance

Silence is kept

God be merciful and bless us, and make his face to shine upon us.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May your ways be known on earth, your saving power to all nations.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

You, Lord, have made known your salvation, and reveal your justice in the sight of the nations.

Romans 12:1-5

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.

God is light.
