KILLISKEY PARISH
MORNING PRAYER FOR USE ON SUNDAY – 25 OCTOBER 2020
THE FIFTH SUNDAY BEFORE ADVENT

The Gathering of God’s People
THE GREETING
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all
and also with you.
Hymn of Praise: CH56 “Lord, as I wake I turn to you”
Lord, as I wake I turn to you,
yourself the first thought of my day:
my King, my God, whose help is sure,
yourself the help for which I pray.
There is no blessing, Lord, from you
for those who make their will their way,
no praise for those who will not praise,
no peace for those who will not pray.
Your loving gifts of grace to me,
those favours I could never earn,
call for my thanks in praise and prayer,
all me to love you in return.
Lord, make my life a life of love,
keep me from sin in all I do;
Lord, make your law my only law,
your will my will, for love of you.
Brian Foley (1919-2000)
based on Psalm 5
INTRODUCTION
We have come together in the name of Christ
to offer our praise and thanksgiving,
to hear and receive God’s holy word,
to seek the forgiveness of our sins,
and to pray for the needs of the world,
that by the power of the Holy Spirit
we may give ourselves to the service of God.
O Lord, open our lips,
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
Let us worship the Lord.
All praise to his name.
Blessed are you, Sovereign God, Creator of all,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
You founded the earth in the beginning
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
In the fulness of time, you made us in your image,
and in these last days you have spoken to us
in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us
let the light of your love always shine in our hearts,
your Spirit ever renew our lives
and your praises ever be on our lips.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever.
PENITENCE
If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
God is faithful and just
and will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 8-9
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
O God, our loving Father in heaven,
we confess that we have sinned against you;
we have broken your commandments;
we have often been selfish,
and we have not loved you as we should.
For these, and all our sins, forgive us, we pray:
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
May the Father of all mercies
cleanse you from your sins,
and restore you in his image
to the praise and glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE
Your word is a lantern to my feet
and a light upon our path. cf Psalm 119:105
O Lord, your word is everlasting:
it stands firm for ever in the heavens. cf Psalm 119: 89
Let us then receive the word of the Lord:
so may the light of your presence shine into our hearts.
Proclaiming and Receiving the Word
The First Reading: Leviticus 19: 1-2, 15-18
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord
your God am holy.
You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with
justice you shall judge your neighbour. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and
you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord.
You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur
guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall
love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.
After the reading silence may be kept.
The Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2: 1-8
You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had
already suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to
declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit
or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message
of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you
know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did
we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as
apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So
deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also
our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
After the reading silence may be kept.
Hymn before the Gospel: CH515 “A new commandment I give unto you” (sung twice)
A new commandment, I give unto you
That you love one another, as I have loved you.
That you love one another, as I have loved you.
By this, shall all know that you are my disciples,
If you have love one for another.
By this, shall all know you are my disciples,
If you have love one for another.
John 13: 34-35
The Gospel Reading: Matthew 22: 34-46
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a
lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He
said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your
neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: ‘What do you think of
the Messiah? Whose son is he?’ They said to him, ‘The son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How is it then
that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,
“The Lord said to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet’ ”?
If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?’ No one was able to give him an answer, nor from
that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
THE SERMON
COLLECT OF THE WORD
O God,
you have commanded us
to love you above all things
and our neighbours as ourselves.
Grant us the Spirit to think and do
what is pleasing in your sight,
that our faith in you may never waver
and our love for one another may not falter;
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Response to God’s Word
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Do you believe and trust in God the Father,
who made the world?
I believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ,
who redeemed mankind?
I believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit
who gives life to the people of God?
I believe and trust in him.
This is the faith of the Church.
This is our faith,
We believe and trust in One God,
Father, Son and holy Spirit.
Responsorial Hymn : CH523 “Help us to help each other, Lord”(vs 1, 3, 4 and 6)
Help us to help each other, Lord,
each other’s cross to bear;
let each his friendly aid afford,
and feel another’s care.
Up into thee, our living head,
let us in all things grow,
till thou hast made us free indeed,
and spotless here below.
Touched by the loadstone of thy love
let all our hearts agree;
and ever toward each other move,
and ever move toward thee.
This is the bond of perfectness,
thy spotless charity.
O let us still, we pray, possess
the mind that was in thee.
Charles Wesley (1707-88) altd.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Almighty and everliving God,
we ask you to hear the prayers we offer in faith.
For the peace that comes from God alone,
for the unity of all peoples,
and for our salvation,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the Church of Christ,
for Michael our Bishop, for all Christian leaders
and for the whole people of God,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the nations of the world,
for our government and all in authority,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this village and community,
For all who have found here a place of refuge,
for our neighbours and our friends,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the good earth which God has given us,
and for the wisdom and will to conserve it,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the aged and infirm,
for the widowed and orphans, for the sick and suffering,
for those suffering from the Coronavirus or its aftermath,
and for all in any need,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the poor and the oppressed,
for the unemployed and the destitute,
for prisoners and captives,
and for all who remember and care for them,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the dying,
for those who mourn,
for the faithful whom we entrust to the Lord in hope,
as we look forward to the day
when we share the fullness of the resurrection,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Rejoicing in the communion of all the saints,
let us commend ourselves,
and one another, and all our life, to God.
Silence is kept.
For yours is the majesty,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
now and for ever. Amen.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Let your merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of your humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions,
make them to ask such things as shall please you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, we pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Closing Hymn: CH517 “Brother, sister, let me serve you” (vs. 1-5)
Brother, sister, let me serve you;
let me be as Christ to you.
Pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.
We are pilgrims on a journey,
and companions on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.
I will hold the Christlight for you
in the nighttime of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.
I will weep when you are weeping;
when you laugh I’ll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we’ve seen this journey through.
When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love and agony.
Richard Gillard (b. 1953)

GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
VERSICLE AND RESPONSE
Send out your light and your truth that they may lead us,
and bring us to your holy hill and dwelling.
PENITENCE
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MAGNIFICAT The Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary Luke 1 : 46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness· of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
who has looked with favour on his lowly servant;
from this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.
God has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
The Lord has shown strength· with his arm
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel.
to remember the promise of mercy,
The promise made to our forebears,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and | to the | Son, ♦
and | to the | Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be|ginning, is | now, ♦

A READING
Matthew 17: 22-27
As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human
hands, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.’ And they were greatly distressed.
When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said, ‘Does your teacher
not pay the temple tax?’ He said, ‘Yes, he does.’ And when he came home, Jesus spoke of it first, asking,
‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or
from others?’ When Peter said, ‘From others’, Jesus said to him, ‘Then the children are free. However, so that
we do not give offence to them, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when
you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it to them for you and me.’
ADDRESS
PRAYER
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
We give you thanks, Almighty God,
for the gift of the Church and its people and its work:
For the mothers and fathers of the faith, and all the faithful of time past;
for your holy prophets and apostles,
and all martyrs and saints in every age and in every land;
for all who serve you as servants and stewards of your divine mysteries,
and those who have taught us your story and shown us your ways.
We thank you, O Lord.
You have made us one with your saints in heaven and earth:
Grant that in our pilgrimage, we may always be supported
by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves
to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy.
Hear us, O Lord.
We offer prayers for the holy catholic Church, and all who seek the Truth:
For the holy communities of which we are a part in Wicklow and Killiskey
and for our ecumenical partners:
Lord, have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
For all bishops, priests, ministers, and leaders:
Lord, have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
For the companions to whom we have promised
our faithfulness and prayers:
Lord, have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Accept the prayers of your people, we pray, and in your mercy,
Look with compassion on all who turn to you for help:
Grant that we may find you and be found by you;
That our divisions may cease; that we may be united in your truth;
And walk together in love to bear witness to your glory in the world. Amen.
COLLECTS
O God,
without you we are not able to please you;
Mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit
may in all things direct and rule our hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
You have taught us to keep your commandments by loving you
and our neighbour: Grant us the grace of your Spirit
that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart,
and united to one another in pure affection
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In your providence, you have given your servants various gifts:
Grant your grace to all who are called to any office or ministry,
and so fill them with truth and clothe them with holiness of life,
that they may faithfully serve you to the glory of your name
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lighten our darkness, O Lord we pray
and in your great mercy defend us
in all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Grant, O Lord,
that the word which we hear this day
may so take root in our hearts,
that we, living in accordance with your holy will,
may ever praise and magnify your glorious name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Now with all your people, we pray the prayer that Jesus taught
those he called brothers and sisters and friends:
Our Father, who art in heaven:
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
for ever and ever. Amen.
THE ENDING
Thanks be to God – Creator, Redeemer and Giver of Life.
May the Lord be with us,
may the holy angels bring us peace,
and may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be always with us. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER 1

THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Opening Hymn: CH6 “Immortal, invisible, God only wise”

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice, like mountains high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish, but nought changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render; O help us to see ’tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

W Chambers Smith (1824-1908) based on 1 Timothy 1: 17; Psalm 36: 6

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

                                                                                                                                                       1 John 1: 8, 9

Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.

A GENERAL CONFESSION

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, And the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips and our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

THE PSALM

Psalm 99

  • The Lord is king: let the peoples tremble; ♦︎ he is enthroned above the cherubim: let the earth shake.
  • The Lord is great in Zion ♦︎ and high above all peoples.
  • Let them praise your name, which is great and awesome; ♦︎ the Lord our God is holy. 4  Mighty king, who loves justice,       you have established equity; ♦︎    you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

5  Exalt the Lord our God; ♦︎    bow down before his footstool, for he is holy. 6  Moses and Aaron among his priests       and Samuel among those who call upon his name; ♦︎    they called upon the Lord and he answered them. 7  He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; ♦︎    they kept his testimonies and the law that he gave them.

  • You answered them, O Lord our God; ♦︎ you were a God who forgave them       and pardoned them for their offences.
  • Exalt the Lord our God and worship him upon his holy hill, ♦︎       for the Lord our God is holy.

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A LESSON from the Old Testament  Isaiah 45: 1-7

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,     whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him     and strip kings of their robes,

to open doors before him—     and the gates shall not be closed:  I will go before you     and level the mountains,

I will break in pieces the doors of bronze     and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness     and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,     the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob,     and Israel my chosen,

I call you by your name,

I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other;     besides me there is no god.

I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun     and from the west, that there is no one besides me;     I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I form light and create darkness,     I make weal and create woe;     I the Lord do all these things.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH97 “Jesus shall reign wher’er the sun”

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head; his name, like incense, shall arise with every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns; the prisoners leap to lose their chains, the weary find eternal rest, and all who suffer want are blessed.

Let all creation rise and bring peculiar honours to our King, angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud Amen.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) altd.

based on Psalm 72: 12-19  A LESSON

from the Gospels

Matthew 22: 15-22

Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

After the reading silence may be kept.

BENEDICTUS

The Song of Zechariah    Luke 1: 68-79

  • Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
  • And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
  • As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets which have been since the world began;
  • That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us,
  • To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
  • To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham:

that he would give us,

  • That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
  • In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
  • And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
  • To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, for the remission of their sins,
  • Through the tender mercy of our God whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
  • To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED is said

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us

Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Amen.

O Lord, show thy mercy upon us and grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, guide and defend our rulers and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy ministers with righteousness and make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people and bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord, because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

O God,

forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant, that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SECOND COLLECT For Peace

O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE THIRD COLLECT For Grace

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS

A Prayer for the President and all in authority

Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land, that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas

Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad. As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Clergy and People

Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [* especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

Closing Hymn: CH493 “Ye that know the Lord is gracious”

Ye that know the Lord is gracious, ye for whom a corner-stone stands, of God elect and precious, laid that ye may build thereon, see that on that sure foundation ye a living temple raise, towers that may tell forth salvation, walls that may re-echo praise.

Living stones, by God appointed each to his allotted place, kings and priests, by God anointed, shall ye not declare his grace? Ye, a royal generation, tell the tidings of your birth, tidings of a new creation to an old and weary earth.

Tell the praise of him who called you out of darkness into light, broke the fetters that enthralled you, gave you freedom, peace and sight: tell the tale of sins forgiven, strength renewed and hope restored, till the earth, in tune with heaven, praise and magnify the Lord.

Cyril Arlington (1872-1955) based on 1 Peter 2: 6-10

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, We thine unworthy servants Do give thee most humble and hearty thanks For all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life: But above all, for thine inestimable love In the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; For the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, That our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful,

And that we show forth thy praise, Not only with our lips but in our lives; By giving up ourselves to thy service, And by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, To whom with thee and the Holy Spirit Be all honour and glory, World without end. Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all

evermore. Amen.                                                         2 Corinthians 13: 13

A READING

John 6: 25-35

When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’  Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

SERVICE OF MORNING PRAYER

The Gathering of God’s People

GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near.
Isaiah 55: 6
Opening Hymn: CH553 “Jesu, lover of my soul” (vs. 1, 3 and 4)
Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high;
hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
till the storm of life be past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last.
Other refuge have I none,
hangs my helpless soul on thee;
leave, ah leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me;
all my trust on thee is stayed,
all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenceless head
with the shadow of thy wing.
Plenteous grace with thee is found,
grace to cover all my sin;
let the healing streams abound;
make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
freely let me take of thee,
spring thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity.
Charles Wesley (1707-88)

INTRODUCTION
Beloved in Christ,
we come together to offer to Almighty God
our worship and praise and thanksgiving,
to confess our sins and to receive God’s forgiveness,
to hear his holy word proclaimed,
to bring before him our needs and the needs of the world,
and to pray that in the power of his Spirit
we may serve him and know the greatness of his love.
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence is kept.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word
O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

Canticle: Jubilate Psalm 100
1 O shout to the Lord in triumph all the earth;
serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his face with songs of joy.
2 Know that the Lord he is God;
it is he who has made us and we are his
we are his people and the sheep of· his pasture.
3 Come into his gates with thanksgiving
and into his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and bless his holy name.
4 For the Lord is good
his loving mercy is for ever,
his faithfulness throughout all generations.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The First Reading: Isaiah 25: 1-9
O Lord, you are my God;
I will exalt you, I will praise your name;
for you have done wonderful things,
plans formed of old, faithful and sure.
For you have made the city a heap,
the fortified city a ruin;
the palace of aliens is a city no more,
it will never be rebuilt.
Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;
cities of ruthless nations will fear you.
For you have been a refuge to the poor,
a refuge to the needy in their distress,
a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat.
When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm,
the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place,
you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds;
the song of the ruthless was stilled.
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear.
And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death for ever.
Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
for the Lord has spoken.
It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

After the reading silence may be kept.

The Second Reading: Philippians 4: 1-9
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in
this way, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I
ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of
the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The
Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is
pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise,
think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen
in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH20 “The King of love my shepherd is”
The King of love my shepherd is,
whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am his,
and he is mine for ever.
Where streams of living water flow
my ransomed soul He leadeth,
and where the verdant pastures grow
with food celestial feedeth.
Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
but yet in love he sought me,
and on His shoulder gently laid,
and home, rejoicing, brought me.
In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still,
thy cross before to guide me.
Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
thy unction grace bestoweth;
and O, what transport of delight
from thy pure chalice floweth!
And so through all the length of days
thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
within thy house for ever.

Henry Williams Baker (1821-77)
metrical version of Psalm 23

The Gospel: Matthew 22: 1-14
Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king
who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the
wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have
been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and
everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” But they made light of it and went away, one to his
farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. The king
was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his
slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and
invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all
whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding
robe, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was
speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’
After the reading silence may be kept.

Closing Hymn: CH587 “Just as I am, without one plea” (vs. 1, 3-6)
Just as I am, without one plea,
but that thy Blood was shed for me,
and that thou bidd’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come.
Just as I am, though tossed about
with many a conflict, many a doubt,
fightings and fears, within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come.
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
sight, riches, healing of the mind;
yea, all I need, in thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am (thy love unknown
has broken every barrier down),
now, to be thine, yea, thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come.

Going Out as God’s People
Follow the things that make for peace,
and the peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
May the God of hope
fill us with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the Holy Spirit
we may abound in hope. Amen. Romans 15: 13

WEDNESDAY 7 OCTOBER. EVENING PRAYER
GREETING
Welcome in the name of Christ. God’s grace, mercy, and
peace be with you.
And also with you.
PREPARATION
We come from scattered lives to meet with God. Let us
recognise God’s presence with us.
As God’s people we have gathered. Let us worship
together. Amen.
PENITENCE
We come to God as one from whom no secrets are
hidden, to ask for his forgiveness and peace.
Silence is kept
Let us admit to God the sin which always confronts us:
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have
wandered and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of
our own hearts. We have offended against your holy
laws. We have left undone those things that we ought
to have done; and we have done those things that we
ought not to have done; and there is no health in us.
But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us sinners. Spare
those who confess their faults. Restore those who are
penitent, according to your promises declared to
humankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O
most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may live a
disciplined, righteous and godly life, to the glory of
your holy name. Amen.
May the God of love and power forgive you and free you
from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit,
and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.
VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
God in Christ has revealed his glory.
Come, let us worship.
From the rising of the sun to its setting.
The Lord’s name is greatly to be praised.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever.
Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD
A READING
St John 11:45-57
Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary
and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. But some
of them went to the Pharisees and told them what he had
done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a
meeting of the council, and said, ‘What are we to do?
This man is performing many signs. If we let him go on
like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans
will come and destroy both our holy place and our
nation.’ But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest
that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all! You
do not understand that it is better for you to have one
man die for the people than to have the whole nation
destroyed.’ He did not say this on his own, but being
high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about
to die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but to
gather into one the dispersed children of God. So from
that day on they planned to put him to death.
Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among
the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim
in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there
with the disciples.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went
up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to
purify themselves. They were looking for Jesus and were
asking one another as they stood in the temple, ‘What do
you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will
he?’ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given
orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should let
them know, so that they might arrest him.
ADDRESS
CANTICLE
Nunc Dimittis
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace:
according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy
salvation which thou hast prepared before the face of
all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be
the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
PRAISE
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.
There is no end to God’s greatness.
One generation shall praise your works to another
and shall declare your power.
All your works praise you, Lord,
and your faithful servants bless you.
They make known the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your power.
My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord:
let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
PRAYERS
We pray to the Lord: in faith we pray.
We pray to you our God.

That we may hear and respond to your call to peace and
justice; in faith we pray
We pray to you our God.
That you will sustain the faith and hope of those who are
lonely, oppressed and anxious; in faith we pray
We pray to you our God.
That you will strengthen us in your service, and fill our
hearts with longing for your kingdom; in faith we pray
We pray to you our God.
God of mercy, you know us and love us and hear our
prayer: keep us in the eternal fellowship of Jesus
Christ our Saviour. Amen.
COLLECT
Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our
hearts are restless till they find their rest in you: Teach us
to offer ourselves to your service, that here we may have
your peace, and in the world to come may see you face
to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SENDING OUT
Heavenly Father, we share together the blessing of your
presence.
Give us in this life knowledge of your truth, and in
the world to come life everlasting; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Harvest Prayer

God of harvest,
gardener supreme,
you place us at the centre,
feed us, equip us and
having provided for us
look to a different harvest –
a fruitfulness of lives
in service to you
and others.
God of harvest,
feed us,
prune us,
harvest us,
that our lives
might bring glory to you. Amen. © John Birch
