Pentecost Sunday

The Gathering of God’s People

GREETING Christ is risen!  The Lord is risen indeed, alleluia!

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.    Romans 5: 5 Opening Hymn: CH305 “O Breath of life, come sweeping through us”   O Breath of life, come sweeping through us, revive your Church with life and power. O Breath of life, come, cleanse, renew us, and fit your Church to meet this hour.

O Wind of God, come bend us, break us, till humbly we confess our need; then in your tenderness remake us, revive, restore, for this we plead.

O Breath of love, come breathe within us, renewing thought and will and heart; come, love of Christ, afresh to win us, revive your Church in every part.

Revive us, Lord! Is zeal abating  while harvest fields are vast and white? Revive us, Lord, the world is waiting, equip your church to spread the light.
Elizabeth (Betty) A.P.Head (1850-1936)

INTRODUCTION Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.
RESPONSORY As we wait in silence, fill us with your Spirit.

As we listen to your word, fill us with your Spirit.

As we worship you in majesty, fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your refreshing, fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your renewing, fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your equipping, fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your empowering, fill us with your Spirit.

Silence is kept.

PENITENCE Great and wonderful are your deeds, Lord God the Almighty Lord, have mercy.  Lord, have mercy.

You are the King of glory, O Christ. Christ, have mercy.  Christ, have mercy.

Come Holy Ghost, our souls inspire. Lord, have mercy.  Lord, have mercy.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: By the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ministry of the Word

The First Reading:  Acts 2: 1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:  “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,    and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,    and your old men shall dream dreams.  Even upon my slaves, both men and women,    in those days I will pour out my Spirit;      and they shall prophesy.  And I will show portents in the heaven above    and signs on the earth below,      blood, and fire, and smoky mist.  The sun shall be turned to darkness    and the moon to blood,      before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 104: 26-36, 37b 26  O Lord, how manifold are your works! •    In wisdom you have made them all;       the earth is full of your creatures. 27  There is the sea, spread far and wide, •    and there move creatures beyond number, both small and great. 28  There go the ships, and there is that Leviathan •    which you have made to play in the deep. 29  All of these look to you •    to give them their food in due season. 30  When you give it them, they gather it; •    you open your hand and they are filled with good. 31  When you hide your face they are troubled; •    when you take away their breath,       they die and return again to the dust. 32  When you send forth your spirit, they are created, •    and you renew the face of the earth. 33  May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; •    may the Lord rejoice in his works; 34  He looks on the earth and it trembles; •    he touches the mountains and they smoke. 35  I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; •    I will make music to my God while I have my being. 36  So shall my song please him •    while I rejoice in the Lord. 37  Bless the Lord, O my soul.       Alleluia.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Second Reading:  1 Corinthians 12: 3b-13 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: CH386 “Spirit of God, unseen as the wind” Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove; teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour’s love.

You spoke to us long, long ago, gave us the written word; we read it still, needing its truth, through it God’s voice is heard.

Without Your help we fail our Lord, we cannot live His way; we need your power, we need your strength, following Christ each day.
Margaret Old (b. 1932) based on Acts 2: 2

The Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

The Gospel: John 20: 19-23 Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to St John chapter 20 beginning at verse 19 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

This is the Gospel of the risen Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS We pray for God to fill us with his Spirit.

Generous God, we thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit. We ask that we may be strengthened to serve you better. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the wisdom of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to make us wise to understand your will. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the peace of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to keep us confident of your love wherever you call us. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the healing of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to bring reconciliation and wholeness where there is division, sickness and sorrow.

Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the gifts of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to equip us for the work which you have given us. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the fruit of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to reveal in our lives the love of Jesus. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the breath of your Holy Spirit, given us by the risen Lord. We ask you to keep the whole Church, living and departed, in the joy of eternal life. Lord, come to bless us and fill us with your Spirit.

Generous God, you sent your Holy Spirit upon your Messiah at the river Jordan, and upon the disciples in the upper room: in your mercy fill us with your Spirit, hear our prayer, and make us one in heart and mind to serve you with joy for ever. Amen.

PEACE  The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace. If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit.
Galatians 5: 22
The peace of the risen Lord be always with you and also with you.

Offertory Hymn: CH307 “Our great Redeemer, as he breathed” Our great Redeemer, as he breathed his tender last farewell, a guide, a Comforter, bequeathed with us to dwell.

He came in tongues of living flame to teach, convince, subdue; unseen as rushing wind he came – as powerful too.

He comes his influence to impart – a gracious, willing guest; when he can find one humble heart where he may rest.

And every virtue we possess, and every victory won, and every thought of holiness are his alone.

Spirit of purity and grace, our weakness, pitying see, and make our hearts thy dwelling place and worthier thee.
Harriet Auber (1773-1862) altd.

Celebrating at the Lord’s Table

AT THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE Father, by your Holy Spirit you keep the Church in unity and truth. As we break bread together, may we be one with Christ in faith and hope and love, now and for ever. Amen.

THE TAKING OF THE BREAD AND WINE Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us therefore let us celebrate the feast.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING  – Prayer 2   The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All glory and honour, thanks and praise be given to you at all times and in all places, Lord, holy Father, true and living God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

For he is your eternal Word through whom you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image.

In your great love you gave him to be made man for us and to share our common life.

In obedience to your will your Son our Saviour offered himself as a perfect sacrifice, and died on the cross for our redemption.
Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin and reconciled us to yourself, our God and Father.

He is our great high priest whom you raised from death and exalted to your right hand on high where he ever lives to intercede for us.

Through him you have sent upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit and made us a royal priesthood called to serve you for ever.

By the same Spirit we are led into all truth and given power to proclaim with boldness the glorious gospel to all the world.

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Merciful Father, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, and we pray that we who eat and drink them in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit in obedience to our Saviour Christ in remembrance of his death and passion may be partakers of his body and his blood, who on the night he was betrayed took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,  Take, eat. This is my body which is given for you; Do this in remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Father, with this bread and this cup, we do as our Saviour has commanded: we celebrate the redemption he has won for us; we proclaim his perfect sacrifice, made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and we look for his coming to fulfil all things according to your will. Christ has died;  Christ is risen;  Christ will come again.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom and in whom, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever.  Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The bread which we break  is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

THE GREAT SILENCE

When the minister has received communion, all keep silence for reflection.

The minister says Let us continue to reflect together.

Jesus is the bread of life. Whoever comes to him will never go hungry. Whoever believes in him will never be thirsty.       cf. John 6: 35

Jesus is the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live for ever.      cf. John 6: 51

Jesus was alive and rose again through the will of his Father. Those who feed on Jesus will live because of him and he will raise them up on the last day.      cf. John 6: 57, 40

Going Out as God’s People

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Faithful God,  who fulfilled the promises of Easter  by sending us your Holy Spirit  and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal:  Open our lips by your Spirit,  that every tongue may tell of your glory;  through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Benediction Hymn: CH639 “O thou who camest from above” O thou who camest from above, the pure celestial fire to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart.

There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire to work, and think, and speak for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up the gift in me.

Still let me prove thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat; till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete.
Charles Wesley (1707-88)

DISMISSAL  May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life he gives. Amen.

May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord. Amen.

May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always. Amen.

Filled with the Spirit’s power, go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.

MORNING PRAYER FOR USE ON SUNDAY  THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT (PASSION SUNDAY) The Gathering of God’s People

INTRODUCTION We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive God’s holy word, to seek the forgiveness of our sins, and to pray for the needs of the world, that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may give ourselves to the service of God.

O Lord, open our lips, and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the Lord. All praise to his name.

Blessed are you,  God of compassion and mercy, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of our sin, your light breaks forth like the dawn and your healing springs up for deliverance. As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help, sustain us with your bountiful Spirit and open our lips to sing your praise.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn of Praise: CH104 “O for a thousand tongues to sing”(vs. 1, 2, 4 and 6) O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer’s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; ’tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’tis life, and health, and peace!

He speaks; and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful broken hearts rejoice; the humble poor believe.

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honours of your name.
Charles Wesley (1707-88)

SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE Your word is a lantern to my feet and a light upon our path.                   cf Psalm 119:105

O Lord, your word is everlasting: it stands firm for ever in the heavens.           cf Psalm 119: 89

Let us then receive the word of the Lord: so may the light of your presence shine into our hearts.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

Ezekiel 37: 1-14 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me to and fro among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said, ‘Sovereign Lord, you alone know.’ Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”’ So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.”’
So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army. Then he said to me: ‘Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.” Therefore prophesy and say to them: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.”’ After the reading silence may be kept.

The Psalm: Psalm 130 1 Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, | hear my | voice; □ let your ears consider well the | voice •of my | suppli|cation. 2 If you, Lord, were to mark what is | done a|miss, □ O | Lord, | who could | stand? 3† But there is for|giveness with | you, □ so | that you | shall be | feared.  4 I wait for the Lord; my | soul | waits for him; □ in his | word | is my | hope. 5 My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch | for the | morning, □ more than the | night watch | for the | morning.  6 O Israel, | wait •for the | Lord, □ for with the | Lord | there is | mercy; 7 With him is | plenteous re|demption □ and he shall redeem | Israel from | all their | sins. Amen.

The Second Reading: Romans 8: 6-11 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.   After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH293 “Breathe on me, Breath of God”  Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure; until with thee I will my will to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine; until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life for all eternity.
Edwin Hatch (1835-89) based on Job 33: 4

John 11: 1-45  Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay ill, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’

When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This illness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.’ Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’

‘But Rabbi,’ they said, ‘a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?’

Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the day-time will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.’

After he had said this, he went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’

His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

So then he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’

Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’

On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.  When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.’

Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’

Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’

Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’

‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. ‘The Teacher is here,’ she said, ‘and is asking for you.’ When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. ‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked.

‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied.

Jesus wept.

Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’

But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. ‘Take away the stone,’ he said.

‘But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.’

Then Jesus said, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?’

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth round his face.

Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’

Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

After the reading silence may be kept.

COLLECT OF THE WORD Life-giving God, your Son came into the world to free us all from sin and death: breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit, that we may be raised to new life in Christ, and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Response to God’s Word

THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PENITENCE Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God,  though we have rebelled against him.     Daniel 9: 9

O God, our loving Father in heaven, we confess that we have sinned against you;
we have broken your commandments; we have often been selfish, and we have not loved you as we should. For these, and all our sins, forgive us, we pray: through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins, and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.   THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE We pray to the Lord for courage to give up other things and to give ourselves to him this Lent.

Give your Church the courage to give up her preoccupation with herself and to give more time to your mission in the world. [We pray for …]  May the blood and water flowing from the side of Jesus bring forgiveness to your people and help us to face the cost of proclaiming salvation. Lord, meet us in the silence,  give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give your world the courage to give up war, bitterness and hatred, and to seek peace. [We pray for …]  May the shoulders of the risen Jesus, once scourged by soldiers, bear the burden of political and military conflict in our world.  Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.
Give us the courage to give up quarrels, strife and jealousy in our families, neighbourhoods and communities. [We pray for …]  May the presence of the risen Jesus, his body once broken and now made whole, bring peace and direction as we live with one another.  Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.
Give us the courage to give up our selfishness as we live for others, and to give time, care and comfort to the sick. [We pray for …]  May the wounded hands of Jesus bring his healing touch,
and the light of his presence fill their rooms. Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.
Give us the courage to give up our fear of death and to rejoice with those who have died in faith. [Especially we hold … in our minds.]  May the feet of the risen Lord Jesus, once nailed to the cross, walk alongside the dying and bereaved in their agony, and walk with us and all your Church through death to the gate of glory.  Lord, meet us in the silence,  give us strength and hear our prayer, here and in eternity. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ delivered and saved the world: Grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross, we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE SEASON OF LENT Merciful Lord,  Grant your people grace to withstand the temptations  of the world, the flesh and the devil  and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;  through Jesus Christ our Lord. Almighty and everlasting God,  you hate nothing that you have made  and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent:  Create and make in us new and contrite hearts  that we, worthily lamenting our sins  and acknowledging our wretchedness,  may receive from you, the God of all mercy,  perfect remission and forgiveness;  through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER IN THE TIME OF ANY COMMON PLAGUE OR SICKNESS O Almighty God the Lord of life and death, of health and sickness; Have pity upon us miserable sinners, now visited with great sickness. Withdraw from us this grievous affliction. Enlarge our charity to relieve those who need our help. Bless the remedies applied to assist them. Give us prudence to see, and vigour to use, those means which thy providence affords, for preventing and alleviating such calamities. And, above all, teach us to know how frail and uncertain our condition is, and so to number our days, that we may seriously apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom, whilst we live here, which may in the end bring us to life everlasting; through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, thine only Son our Lord. Amen. Book of Common Prayer 1926
ARCHBISHOP’S PRAYER IN THE TIME OF THE CORONAVIRUS Almighty and All-loving God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we pray to you through Christ the Healer for those who suffer from the Coronavirus Covid-19 in Ireland and across the world. We pray for all who reach out to those who mourn the loss of each and every person who has dies as a result of contracting the disease. Give wisdom to policymakers, skill to researchers, comfort to everyone in distress and a sense of calm to us all in these days of uncertainty and distress. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord who showed compassion to the outcast, acceptance to the rejected and love to those to whom no love is shown. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Gathering our prayers and praises into one, we are bold to pray:  Our Father, who art in heaven:  hallowed be thy name,  thy kingdom come,  thy will be done,   on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.   And forgive us our trespasses   as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

Closing Hymn: T&P 100 “My hope is built on nothing less” My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand – all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide his face, I rest on his unchanging grace in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.
Edward Mote (1797-1874)

MORNING PRAYER FOR USE ON SUNDAY –
24 MAY 2020
THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The Gathering of God’s People
THE GREETING Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to you be glory and praise for ever. From the deep waters of death you brought your people to new birth by raising your Son to life in triumph. Through him dark death has been destroyed and radiant life is everywhere restored. As you call us out of darkness into his marvellous light may our lives reflect his glory and our lips repeat the endless song: Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn of Praise: CH266 “Hail the day that sees him rise”(vs 1-3) Hail the day that sees him rise, alleluia!  to his throne beyond the skies, alleluia!  Christ, the Lamb for sinners given, alleluia!  enters now the highest heaven. Alleluia!

There for him high triumph waits; alleluia!  lift your heads, eternal gates! Alleluia!  He has conquered death and sin; alleluia!  take the King of glory in! Alleluia!
See! the heaven its Lord receives, alleluia!  yet he loves the earth he leaves; alleluia!  though returning to his throne, alleluia!  still he calls us all his own. Alleluia!,

Charles Wesley (1707-88) altd. v. 2 based on Psalm 24: 7-10

PENITENCE God our Father, we come to you in sorrow for our sins. For turning away from you, and ignoring your will for our lives; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

For behaving just as we wish, without thinking of you; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

For failing you by what we do, and think and say; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

For letting ourselves be drawn away from you by temptations in the world about us; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

For living as if we were ashamed to belong to your Son; Father, forgive us: save us and help us.

May the God of love bring us back to himself,  forgive us our sins, and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Acts 1: 6-14 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. After the reading silence may be kept.

The Psalm: Psalm 68: 1-10, 32-35 1  Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered; ♦︎    let those that hate him flee before him. 2  As the smoke vanishes, so may they vanish away; ♦︎    as wax melts at the fire,       so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. 3  But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; ♦︎    let them make merry with gladness. 4  Sing to God, sing praises to his name;       exalt him who rides on the clouds. ♦︎    The Lord is his name; rejoice before him. 5  Father of the fatherless, defender of widows, ♦︎    God in his holy habitation! 6  God gives the solitary a home       and brings forth prisoners to songs of welcome, ♦︎    but the rebellious inhabit a burning desert. 7  O God, when you went forth before your people, ♦︎    when you marched through the wilderness, 8  The earth shook and the heavens dropped down rain,       at the presence of God, the Lord of Sinai, ♦︎    at the presence of God, the God of Israel. 9  You sent down a gracious rain, O God; ♦︎    you refreshed your inheritance when it was weary. 10  Your people came to dwell there; ♦︎    in your goodness, O God, you provide for the poor. 32  Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth; ♦︎    make music in praise of the Lord;
33  He rides on the ancient heaven of heavens ♦︎    and sends forth his voice, a mighty voice. 34  Ascribe power to God, whose splendour is over Israel, ♦︎    whose power is above the clouds. 35  How terrible is God in his holy sanctuary, ♦︎    the God of Israel, who gives power and strength to his people!       Blessed be God.

Glory to the Father, and | to the | Son, ♦︎   and | to the | Holy | Spirit;   as it was in the be|ginning, is | now, ♦︎   and shall be for | ever. | A|men.   The Second Reading: 1 Peter 4: 12-14; 5: 6-11 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH285“The head that once was crowned with thorns”  The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now; a royal diadem adorns the mighty victor’s brow.

The highest place that heaven affords is his, is his by right, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and heaven’s eternal Light:

The joy of all who dwell above, the joy of all below, to whom he manifests his love, and grants his name to know.

To them the cross, with all its shame, with all its grace, is given; their name an everlasting name, their joy the joy of heaven.

They suffer with the Lord below, they reign with him above, their profit and their joy to know the mystery of his love.

The Cross he bore is life and health, though shame and death to him; his people’s hope, his people’s wealth, their everlasting theme.

Thomas Kelly (1769-1854) based on Revelation 17: 14; 19: 12, 16

John 17: 1-11 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

After the reading silence may be kept.
THE SERMON

COLLECT OF THE WORD O God,  whose Son, Jesus, prayed for his disciples, and sent them into the world to proclaim the coming of your kingdom: by your Holy Spirit, hold the Church in unity, and keep it faithful to your word, so that, breaking bread together, we may be one with Christ in faith and love and service, now and for ever. Amen.

The Response to God’s Word

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Do you believe and trust in God the Father, who made the world?  I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ, who redeemed mankind?  I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God?  I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.  This is our faith.  we believe and trust in One God,  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Hymn of Faith: Thanks & Praise 136 “Spirit of holiness, wisdom and faithfulness”(vs. 1 and 2) Spirit of holiness, wisdom and faithfulness, wind of the Lord, blowing strongly and free: strength of our serving and joy of our worshipping – Spirit of God, bring your fulness to me!

You came to interpret and teach us effectively all that the Saviour has spoken and done; to glorify Jesus is all your activity – promise and gift of the Father and Son:

You came with your gifts to supply all our poverty, pouring your love on the church in her need; you came with your fruit for our growth to maturity, richly refreshing the souls that you feed:

Christopher Idle (b. 1938)

“THY KINGDOM COME” PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer in the period between the Ascension and Pentecost.

Let us pray. Through Christ, who ever lives to make intercession for us, let us pray to the Lord. Lift up our hearts to the heavenly places and inspire us to serve you as a royal priesthood:  Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Let all peoples acknowledge your kingdom and grant on earth the blessing of peace:  Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Send down upon us the gift of the Spirit and renew your Church with power from on high:  Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

May peace abound and righteousness flourish, that we may vanquish injustice and wrong:  Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Help us to proclaim the good news of salvation, and grant us the needful gifts of your grace:  Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Let us commend the world, for which Christ prays, to the mercy and protection of God. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY O God the King of Glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Mercifully give us faith to know that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth to the end of time; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

PRAYERS ABOUT THE CURRENT CRISIS Lord, help us to remember the prayer of St Teresa of Ávila:

“Let nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you, all things are passing, God is unchanging.

Patience gains all; nothing is lacking to those who have God: God alone is sufficient.” Amen.

Most Merciful and Triune God, We come to you in our weakness. We come to you in our fear. We come to you with trust.
For you alone are our hope.

We place before you the disease present in our world. We turn to you in our time of need.

Bring wisdom to doctors. Give understanding to scientists. Endow caregivers with compassion and generosity. Bring healing to those who are ill. Protect those who are most at risk. Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one. Welcome those who have died into Your Eternal Home.

Stabilize our communities. Unite us in our compassion. Remove all fear from our hearts. Fill us with confidence in your care. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: CH635 “Be thou my guardian and my guide” Be thou my guardian and my guide, and hear me when I call; let not my slippery footsteps slide, and hold me lest I fall.

The world, the flesh, and Satan dwell around the path I tread; O save me from the snares of hell, thou quickener of the dead.

And if I tempted am to sin, and outward things are strong, do thou, O Lord, keep watch within, and save my soul from wrong.

Still let me ever watch and pray, and feel that I am frail; that if the tempter cross my way, then may he not prevail.

Isaac Williams (1802-1865) altd. based on Psalm 17

THE ASCENSION DAY – EVENING PRAYER

Thursday 21 May 2020

PREPARATION
PENITENCE
All say Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault; by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Merciful Lord, grant to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Your throne has been established from of old; you are from everlasting. Alleluia.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth, to you be glory and praise for ever. From the darkness of death you have raised your Christ to the right hand of your majesty on high. The pioneer of our faith, his passion accomplished, has opened for us the way to heaven and sends on us the promised Spirit. May we be ready to follow the Way and so be brought to the glory of his presence where songs of triumph for ever sound: Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.

THE WORD OF GOD
A PSALM
Psalm 93 1 The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;    the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; 2   your throne is established from of old;    you are from everlasting. 3 The floods have lifted up, O Lord,    the floods have lifted up their voice;    the floods lift up their roaring. 4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,    more majestic than the waves* of the sea,    majestic on high is the Lord! 5 Your decrees are very sure;    holiness befits your house,    O Lord, for evermore.

A CANTICLE
A SONG OF CHRIST’S APPEARING    1 Timothy 3: 16; 6: 5, 16 Refrain: Christ was believed in throughout the world and taken up in glory.

1    Christ Jesus was revealed in the flesh  ♦ and vindicated in the spirit. 2    He was seen by angels  ♦ and proclaimed among the nations. 3    Believed in throughout the world,  ♦ he was taken up in glory. 4    This will be made manifest at the proper time  ♦ by the blessed and only Sovereign, 5    Who alone has immortality,  ♦ and dwells in unapproachable light.

To the King of kings and Lord of lords  ♦ be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.

Refrain: Christ was believed in throughout the world and taken up in glory.

A READING
Acts 1: 1-11 1In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This’, he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’

So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’

PSALM
Psalm 134 1 Behold now, praise the Lord, ■       all ye servant of the Lord. 2 Ye that by night stand in the house of the Lord ■       even in the courts of the house of our God. 3 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary ■     and praise the Lord. 4 The Lord that made heaven and earth ■       give thee blessing out of Zion.

A READING

Ephesians 1:15-23 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of
his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
ADDRESS

RESPONSORY Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.  For thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.

HYMN
Before the ending of the day,  creator of the world, we pray  that thou with wonted love wouldst keep  thy watch around us while we sleep.

O let no evil dreams be near,  or phantoms of the night appear;  our ghostly enemy restrain,  lest aught of sin our bodies stain.

All praise be thine, O risen Lord, from death to endless life restored; whom with the Father, we adore, and Holy Spirit, evermore. Amen.

VERSICLE AND RESPONSE The following responsory may be said: Keep me as the apple of an eye.  Hide me under the shadow of thy wings.  Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping,  that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy                   Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping,

The Sixth Sunday of Easter

SERVICE OF MORNING PRAYER

The Gathering of God’s People

GREETING The Lord be with you and also with you.

Opening Hymn: CH28 “I sing the almighty power of God”(vs 1-6) I sing the almighty power of God  that made the mountains rise,  that spread the flowing seas abroad,  and built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained  the sun to rule the day;  the moon shines full at his command,  and all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord  that filled the earth with food;  he formed the creatures with his word  and then pronounced them good.

Lord, how thy wonders are displayed,  where’er I turn mine eye,  if I survey the ground we tread  or gaze upon the sky.

There’s not a plant or flower below  but makes thy glories known,  and clouds arise, and tempests blow,  by order from thy throne.

All creatures, numerous as they be, are subject to thy care;  there’s not a place where we can flee but God is present there.
Isaac Watts (1674-1748) altd. based on Psalm 136: 5-9; James 1: 17

INTRODUCTION We come to offer to Almighty God our worship and praise and thanksgiving, to confess our sins and to receive God’s forgiveness, to hear his holy word proclaimed, to bring before him our needs and the needs of the world, and to pray that in the power of his Spirit we may serve him and know the greatness of his love. Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

Silence is kept.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault; by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

Stand O Lord, open our lips and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

The First Reading: Acts 17: 22-31 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

The Psalm: Psalm 66: 7-18 7  Bless our God, O you peoples; ♦︎    make the voice of his praise to be heard, 8  Who holds our souls in life ♦︎    and suffers not our feet to slip. 9  For you, O God, have proved us; ♦︎    you have tried us as silver is tried. 10  You brought us into the snare; ♦︎    you laid heavy burdens upon our backs. 11  You let enemies ride over our heads;       we went through fire and water; ♦︎    but you brought us out into a place of liberty. 12  I will come into your house with burnt offerings       and will pay you my vows, ♦︎    which my lips uttered       and my mouth promised when I was in trouble. 13  I will offer you fat burnt sacrifices       with the smoke of rams; ♦︎    I will sacrifice oxen and goats. 14  Come and listen, all you who fear God, ♦︎    and I will tell you what he has done for my soul. 15  I called out to him with my mouth ♦︎    and his praise was on my tongue. 16  If I had nursed evil in my heart, ♦︎    the Lord would not have heard me, 17  But in truth God has heard me; ♦︎    he has heeded the voice of my prayer. 18  Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, ♦︎    nor withheld his loving mercy from me.   Glory to the Father, and to the Son,   and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the be|ginning, is now,    and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Second Reading: 1 Peter 3: 13-22 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH294 “Come down, O love divine”(vs 1, 2 and 4) Come down, O Love divine,  seek thou this soul of mine,  and visit it with thine own ardour glowing;  O Comforter, draw near,  within my heart appear,  and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,  till earthly passions turn  to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;  and let thy glorious light  shine ever on my sight,  and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong,  with which the soul will long,  shall far outpass the power of human telling;  for none can guess its grace,  till Love create a place  wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.
Bianco da Siena (d. 1434) tr. Richard F. Littledale (1833-90) based on John 14: 16, 26

The Gospel: John 14: 15-21 “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me,
and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

The Canticle: BENEDICTUS  The Song of Zechariah  Luke 1: 68-79 Alleluia! The Lord is risen, as he promised to you. Alleluia!

THE SERMON

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Faith: CH618 “Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy” Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labours and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

The Prayers of the People The Lord be with you and also with you. Kneel Let us pray. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, On earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. O Lord, guide and defend our rulers and grant our government wisdom. Let your ministers be clothed with righteousness and let your servants shout for joy. O Lord, save your people and bless those whom you have chosen. Give peace in our time, O Lord, and let your glory be over all the earth. O God, make clean our hearts within us and renew us by your Holy Spirit.
THE COLLECTS
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: Grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECTS AT MORNING PRAYER O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everliving God, we give you thanks for bringing us safely to this day: Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger, and in all things guide us to know and do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life, we may never forget your presence but may remember that we are always walking in your sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS For frontline health care workers, we thank you for their vocational call to serve us. Caring God, we also pray: Keep them safe and healthy. Keep their families safe and healthy. Help them to be knowledgeable about the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Help them to stay clear-minded in the midst of the surrounding panic.
Deliver them from anxiety for their own loved ones (aging parents, children, spouses, roommates). Give them compassion for every patient in their care. Provide for them financially, especially if they fall ill and are unable to work. Help Christians in health care to exhibit extraordinary peace, so that many would ask about the reason for their hope. Give them opportunities to proclaim the gospel.

God, we trust that you are good and do good. Teach us to be your faithful people in this time of global crisis. Help us to follow in the footsteps of our faithful shepherd, Jesus, who laid down his life for the sake of love. Glorify his name as you equip us with everything needed for doing your will. Amen.

PRAYERS  Let us pray that Christ’s risen life may be evident in us daily.

INTERCESSIONS O Christ, in your resurrection the heavens and the earth rejoice. Alleluia! By your resurrection you broke open the gates of hell and destroyed sin and death. Keep us victorious over sin.

By your resurrection you raised the dead and brought us from death to life. Guide us in the way of eternal life.

By your resurrection you confounded your guards and executioners and filled the disciples with joy. Give us joy in your service.

By your resurrection you proclaimed good news to the women and apostles and brought salvation to the whole world. Direct our lives as your new creation.

God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life.

From the waters of death you raise us with him and renew your gift of life within us.

THANKSGIVINGS All-loving and all-powerful God, we thank you for this season and all it means – the assurance it brings that your love is stronger than anything else in heaven or earth – stronger than evil, than all human powers, than sorrow and suffering, than death itself. Accept our thanks for this day. Accept our thanks for everything.

We thank you that in our world of so much pain and sorrow you have shown that hope and faith is not in vain. Your purpose is always at work, giving meaning to our seeking and striving after good. Accept our thanks for this day. Accept our thanks for everything.

All-loving and all-powerful God, accept our praise for all you have done in Christ – a mystery before which we stand in awe, a wonder before which we bow down in praise, a truth in which we live and move and have our being. Accept our thanks for this day. Accept our thanks for everything, in the name of the living and risen Christ. Amen.                                                                                   Closing Hymn: CH640 “Purify my heart” Purify my heart, let me be as gold and precious silver; purify my heart, let me be as gold, pure gold.

Refiner’s fire, my heart’s one desire is to be holy; set apart for You, Lord; I choose to be holy, set apart for You,  my master, ready to do Your will.

Purify my heart, cleanse me from within and make me holy; purify my heart, cleanse me from my sin, deep within.
Brian Doerksen (b. 1965)

Going Out as God’s People May the risen Christ grant us the joys of eternal life. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PREPARATION
OPENING PRAYER
Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you,  Holy Spirit, Comforter,  treasure of all goodness and giver of life,  come and dwell in us,  cleanse us from all sin,  and in your love bring us to salvation.
RESPONSORY
Holy God, holy and strong,  holy and immortal,  have mercy on us.

THE WORD OF GOD
PSALM
Psalm 30

Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead. 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have | raised me | up ■  and have not let my | foes | triumph | over me. 2 O | Lord my | God, ■ I cried out to | you and | you have | healed me. 3. You brought me up, O Lord, | from the | dead; ■ you restored me to life from among | those that go | down •to the | Pit. 4 Sing to the Lord, you | servants of | his; ■ give | thanks to his | holy | name. 5. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favour | for a | lifetime. ■ Heaviness may endure for a night, but | joy comes | in the | morning.  Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

6 In my prosperity I said, ‘I shall | never be | moved. ■  You, Lord, of your goodness, have | made my | hill so | strong.’ 7 Then you | hid your | face from me ■  and | I was | utterly dis|mayed. 8. To you, O | Lord, I | cried; ■  to the Lord I | made my | suppli|cation: 9 ‘What profit is there in my blood, if I go | down •to the | Pit? ■  Will the dust praise you | or de|clare your | faithfulness? 10. ‘Hear, O Lord, and have | mercy up|on me; ■  O | Lord, | be my | helper.’  Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

11 You have turned my mourning | into | dancing; ■  you have put off my sackcloth and | girded | me with | gladness; 12 Therefore my heart sings to | you without | ceasing; ■  O Lord my God, I will | give you | thanks for | ever. Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■  and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, is now, ■  and shall be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-Prayer Lord, you hide your face when we trust in ourselves; strip us of false security and re-clothe us in your praise, that we may know you as the one who raises us from death, as you raised your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

A READING
John 8: 31-38 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’

Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.’

MEDITATION
A period of meditation on the reading follows.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE
NUNC DIMITTIS  The Song of Simeon  Luke 2: 29-32 1 Now, Lord, you let your servant | go in | peace: ■ your | word has | been ful|filled. 2 My own eyes have | seen the · sal|vation ■ which you have prepared in the | sight of | every | people. 3 A light to re|veal you · to the | nations ■ and the | glory · of your | people | Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■  and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, is now, ■ and shall be for ever. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER 1 – 10 MAY 2020 THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Opening Hymn: CH92 “How sweet the name of Jesus sounds”(vs. 1-4 and 6) How sweet the name of Jesus sounds  in a believer’s ear!  It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,  and drives away our fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole  and calms the troubled breast;  ’tis manna to the hungry soul,  and to the weary, rest.

Dear Name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place, my never-ending treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,  my prophet, priest, and King,  my lord, my life, my way, my end,  accept the praise I bring.

Till then I would your love proclaim  with every fleeting breath;  and may the music of your name  refresh my soul in death.
John Newton (1725-1807)
SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept.              1 Corinthians 15: 20 Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.
A GENERAL CONFESSION Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, And the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, open thou our lips and our mouth shall show forth thy praise. God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.
FIRST CANTICLE
VENITE Psalm 95 1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord:    let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are all the corners of the earth and the strength of the hills is his also.

5 The sea is his, and he made it, and his hands prepared the dry land.

6 O come, let us worship and fall down and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7 For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

8 To-day if ye will hear his voice: harden not your hearts, as in the provocation and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

9 When your fathers tempted me, provèd me, and saw my works.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways;

11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest.   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A LESSON from the Old Testament
Acts 7: 55-60 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep. After the reading silence may be kept.
THE PSALM
Psalm 31: 1, 5, 11-12, 14-16, 24: “Father into your hands I commend my spirit”

Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge let me never be put to shame; in your justice rescue me. Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God!

For all my foes I am an object of reproach, a laughing-stock to my neighbours and a dread to my friends; they who see me abroad flee from me. I am forgotten like the unremembered dead I am like a dish that is broken.

But my trust is in you, O Lord. I say “You are my God, in your hands is my destiny. Rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors”.

Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your kindness. Take courage and be stout-hearted  All you who hope in the Lord.

Tom Kendzia

A LESSON from the New Testament
1 Peter 2: 2-10 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion,     a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him     will never be put to shame.’

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, ‘The stone the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone,’ and, ‘A stone that causes people to stumble     and a rock that makes them fall.’

They stumble because they disobey the message – which is also what they were destined for.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: T&P 101 “My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine” (vs 1, 2 and 4) My Jesus, I love Thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; my gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou, If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I love Thee, because thou hast first loved me, and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree; I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

William R. Featherstone (1846-73)
A LESSON from the Gospels
John 14: 1-14  ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’
Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’ Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. After the reading silence may be kept.

BENEDICTUS The Song of Zechariah    Luke 1: 68-79 1 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 2 And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 3 As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets which have been since the world began; 4 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us, 5 To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 6 To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: that he would give us, 7 That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 8 In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. 9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 10 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, for the remission of their sins, 11 Through the tender mercy of our God whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us, 12 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED is said
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn of Faith: CH625 “Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire”(vs. 1-4) Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered or expressed; the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast.

Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye when none but God is near.

Prayer is the simplest form of speech that infant lips can try; prayer the sublimest strains that reach the Majesty on high.

Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath, the Christian’s native air, his watchword at the gates of death: he enters heaven with prayer.
James Montgomery (1771-1854) altd.
Kneel Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us and grant us thy salvation. O Lord, guide and defend our rulers and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness and make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people and bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord, because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SECOND COLLECT For Peace O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE THIRD COLLECT For Grace O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CORONAVIRUS INTERCESSIONS Let us pray to God, who alone makes us dwell in safety:

For all who are affected by coronavirus, through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For those who are guiding our nation at this time, and shaping national policies, that they may make wise decisions: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For doctors, nurses and medical researchers, that through their skill and insights many will be restored to health: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For the vulnerable and the fearful, for the gravely ill and the dying, that they may know your comfort and peace: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE SERMON

Closing Hymn: CH660 “Thine for ever! God of love” (vs 1, 2 and 4) Thine for ever! God of love, hear us from thy throne above; thine for ever may we be here and in eternity.

Thine for ever! Lord of life, shield us through our earthly strife; thou the Life, the Truth, the Way, guide us to the realms of day.

Thine for ever! O how blest they who find in thee their rest! Saviour, guardian, heavenly friend, O defend us to the end.

Thine for ever! Thou our guide, all our wants by thee supplied, all our sins by thee forgiven, lead us, Lord, from earth to heaven.
Mary F. Maude (1819-1913) PRAYERS
A Prayer for the President and all in authority Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land, that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad. As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Clergy and People Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [* especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.
A General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, We thine unworthy servants Do give thee most humble and hearty thanks For all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life: But above all, for thine inestimable love In the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; For the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, That our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, And that we show forth thy praise, Not only with our lips but in our lives; By giving up ourselves to thy service, And by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, To whom with thee and the Holy Spirit Be all honour and glory, World without end. Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13: 13

A READING

St. John 3:16-21 But the word of God continued to advance and gain adherents. Then after completing their mission Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem and brought with them John, whose other name was Mark. Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then after
fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them.
