Evening Prayer

11th August, 2022.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 11

In the Lord have I taken refuge; how then can you say to me, ‘Flee like a bird to the hills,

‘For see how the wicked bend the bow and fit their arrows to the string, to shoot from the shadows at the true of heart.

When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven.

His eyes behold, his eyelids try every mortal being.

The Lord tries the righteous as well as the wicked, but those who delight in violence his soul abhors.

Upon the wicked he shall rain coals of fire and burning sulphur; scorching wind shall be their portion to drink.

For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds, and those who are upright shall behold his face.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises like incense before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

St. Luke 12:41-48

Peter said, ‘Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?’ And the Lord said, ‘Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that slave says to himself, “My master is delayed in coming”, and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful. That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. But one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.

Wednesday 3 August 2022: Evening Prayer

PREPARATION
OPENING SENTENCES
Jesus Christ is the light of the world,
the light no darkness can overcome.
Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening
And the day is almost over.
Let your light scatter the darkness
And illumine your church.
John 1: 5; 8: 12; Luke 24: 29

PENITENCE
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

THANKSGIVING FOR LIGHT
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation.
In the beginning you separated light from darkness
and placed all your works in our hands.
You have given us the light of day
that we might see your wonders
in all we say and do;
you give us the gentle darkness of the night
that we might rest from our burdens
and be refreshed in body and spirit.
Break through the darkness of our sins
with the splendour of your mercy and love.
Send your light to dispel our fears and anxieties
and fill us with hope and joy.
Glory, praise and honour are yours, O God,
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
in the power of the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

FIRST CANTICLE
A SONG OF THE LIGHT
Hail, gladdening light, of his pure glory poured,
Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest,
Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now we are come to the sun’s hour of rest.
The lights of evening round us shine:
We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit divine.
Worthiest art thou at all times to be sung
With undefiled tongue.
Son of our God, giver of life, alone:
Therefore in all the world thy glories, Lord, they own.

THE WORD OF GOD
Psalm 4
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, ♦︎
those who build it labour in vain.
2 Unless the Lord keeps the city, ♦︎
the guard keeps watch in vain.
3 It is in vain that you hasten to rise up early
and go so late to rest, eating the bread of toil, ♦︎
for he gives his beloved sleep.
4 Children are a heritage from the Lord ♦︎
and the fruit of the womb is his gift.
5 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, ♦︎
so are the children of one’s youth.
6 Happy are those who have their quiver full of them: ♦︎
they shall not be put to shame
when they dispute with their enemies in the gate.
Glory be to the Father, ♦︎
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, ♦︎
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Luke 12: 22-31
He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or
about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet
God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by
worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as
that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor
spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so
clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how
much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat
and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive
after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom,
and these things will be given to you as well.

ADDRESS
Silence for Meditation

PRAYERS
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Our Father, who is in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Show us your mercy, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
O Lord, guide and defend our rulers
and grant our government wisdom.
Let your ministers be clothed with righteousness
and let your servants shout for joy.
O Lord, save your people
and bless those whom you have chosen.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
and let your glory be over all the earth.
O God, make clean our hearts within us
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.
O God, make clean our hearts within us;
and take not your Holy Spirit from us.

THANKSGIVINGS
Gracious God,
we thank you that you are always with us,
in the bad times as well as the good,
the difficult as well as the easy,
the sad as well as the happy.
Lord of all hopefulness,
hear our prayer.
We thank you that, though we have sometimes
been unsure of the way ahead,
you have always been there to guide us,
though we have felt discouraged,
you have offered us fresh inspiration,
though we have been in despair,
you have given us hope.
Lord of all hopefulness,
hear our prayer.
We thank you for the assurance this brings us
that your steadfast love never ceases,
that your mercies are new every morning,
that great is your faithfulness.
Lord of all hopefulness,
hear our prayer.
May that conviction give us confidence in the days ahead,
so that whatever problems we face,
whatever disappointments we experience,
whatever sorrows may befall us,
we will still find reason to look forward,
reason to believe in the future,
and reason to hope.
Lord of all hopefulness,
hear our prayer,
in the name of Christ. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Lord of all power and might,
the author and giver of all good things:
Graft in our hearts the love of your name,
increase in us true religion,
nourish us with all goodness,
and of your great mercy keep us in the same;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECTS AT EVENING PRAYER
O God
from whom all holy desires
all good judgements
and all just works proceed:
Give to your servants
that peace which the world cannot give,
that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments,
and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
Lighten our darkness, O Lord, we pray
and in your great mercy defend us
from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Evening Prayer

20th July, 2022.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 119:97-104

Lord, how I love your law! All the day long it is my study.

Your commandments have made me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me.

I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.

I am wiser than the aged, because I keep your commandments.

I restrain my feet from every evil way, that I may keep your word.

I have not turned aside from your judgments, for you have been my teacher.

How sweet are your words on my tongue! They are sweeter than honey to my mouth.

Through your commandments I get understanding; therefore I hate all lying ways.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises like incense before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

St. John 6:41-51

Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught by God.” Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 101

1  I will sing of faithfulness and justice; ♦︎
to you, O Lord, will I sing.
2  Let me be wise in the way that is perfect:
when will you come to me?

3  I will walk with purity of heart ♦︎
within the walls of my house.
4  I will not set before my eyes
a counsel that is evil.

5  I abhor the deeds of unfaithfulness; ♦︎
they shall not cling to me.
6  A crooked heart shall depart from me;
I will not know a wicked person.

7  One who slanders a neighbour in secret ♦︎
I will quickly put to silence.
8  Haughty eyes and an arrogant heart
I will not endure.

9  My eyes are upon the faithful in the land, ♦︎
that they may dwell with me.
10  One who walks in the way that is pure
shall be my servant.

11  There shall not dwell in my house ♦︎
one that practises deceit.
12  One who utters falsehood
shall not continue in my sight.

13  Morning by morning will I put to silence ♦︎
all the wicked in the land,
14  To cut off from the city of the Lord
all those who practise evil.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Matthew 25: 31-46

‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,* you did it to me.” Then he will say to those at his left hand, “You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.” Then they also will answer, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?” Then he will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’

Eternal and everlasting God,

in the growing quietness of the evening

and the deepening shadows of the night,

grant us sleep and rest.

With the stilling of the day’s doings,

and the end of coming and going about us,

make us to be sleepy with heavy eyes and tired limbs.

As thy creatures are lying down in the wood,

as the bird is quiet in its nest and the wild thing in its hole,

as the stream is still in its bed reflecting the great expanse of stars above,

may we in our sleep reflect our confidence in thee,

and our assurance in thy constant peace.

In our sleep give us that deeper communion of our souls

with thou who restorest unto health.

For thy name’s sake. Amen.

Heritage Week

The church will be open during Heritage Week. Patricia Butler plans to give a tour each day at 3pm and a YouTube video based on her book “Nun’s Cross Church and its Treasures” will be available to view. The dates are Saturday, August 13th and Sunday, 14th August also the following weekend August 20th and August 21st. If at all possible, we would be grateful for help from 10.30 a.m.- 5 p.m. each Saturday and on Sundays from 2.30 – 5 p.m. If you are available to help with this venture, please let Patricia know.

Working Group – The Needs of our Parish

In order to assess the current and future needs of our growing parish and its parishioners it has been proposed that a working group be established to look at how we might best gather feedback and opinions from our parishioners and friends.

We want this initiative to include the views of as wide and diverse a range of those who have even a passing interest in the parish of Killiskey and its church at Nun’s Cross, from the oldest to the youngest, the longest standing parishioner and the newest arrival in the area. Doing so will help us plan effectively as we look to the future of this parish.

The group will work independently of the Select Vestry and report on its findings, once the work is completed. We hope that people representative of different groups within the parish, along with representatives of the Select Vestry might be willing to be part of the working group to steer this project. Should you be interested in being part of this working group, please contact Tony Dunne on 01 – 2811127 or awdunne@iol.ie before the 15th of July 2022.

Defibrillator Training

It provides bespoke training and specific first aid supplies to companies and individuals. For further details of its products and services, please see its website:

www.firmsafetysolutions.ie

On Thursday 7th July 2022 from 7pm (sharp) to 9pm it will provide DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING in Nun’s Cross National School (by kind permission).

The cost per participant will be €15. If you wish to attend, please ring or text Sonia Appelbe on 087-6798876.

Spaces are limited so please contact Sonia as soon as possible and no later than 5pm on Monday 4th July to avoid disappointment.

Evening Prayer

6th July, 2022.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 6

O Lord, rebuke me not in your wrath; neither chaste me in your fierce anger.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am weak; Lord, heal me, for my bones are racked.

My soul shakes with terror; how long, O Lord, how long?

Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul; save me for your loving mercy’s sake.

For in death no one remembers you; and who can give you thanks in the grave?

I am weary with my groaning; every night I drench my pillow and flood my bed with my tears.

My eyes are wasted with grief and worn away because of all my enemies.

Depart from me, all you that do evil, for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping.

The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.

All my enemies shall be put to shame and confusion; they shall suddenly turn back in their shame.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises like incense before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

St. Luke 10:13-16

‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But at the judgement it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. ‘Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.’

Address

Anthem: Thou knowest, Lord

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;
Shut not thy merciful ears unto our pray’rs;
But spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty.
O holy and most merciful Saviour,
Thou most worthy Judge eternal,
Suffer us not at our last hour,
For any pains of death to fall away from Thee.

Henry Purcell
