Advent Reflections Series

The Ecumenical Bible Week executive is providing a series of Reflections
for each day of Advent (28 November to 24 December inclusive). The
series is called “Walking Advent with the Scriptures”. Each day there will
be a different contributor who will give a reflection based on a Scripture
reading. These will be given by a broad range of people – clergy and lay,
female and male, based throughout Ireland and from many different
Christian traditions.
The Videos can be viewed each day of Advent from 12:30pm on the
Ecumenical Bible week Facebook page which is
https://www.facebook.com/bibleweekie
The daily Advent Calendar in use can also be downloaded there.
Ecumenical Bible Week takes place each year between Pentecost and
Trinity Sunday. It features a range of talks, seminars and prayer times.
Rev Ken is a member of the organising team.

COP 26

COP26 finished in Glasgow in November, with most countries agreeing to
net zero commitments; reducing forest loss and degradation; phasing out
coal burning; increasing the production of electric vehicles; reducing
methane emissions; wealthier nations increasing funding for poorer nations
to tackle and adapt to climate change. Undoubtedly, some countries could
have promised to do more, but it is hoped that the target of restricting an
increase in global temperature to 1.5⁰C is attainable. Individually, we can
also play our part. Obviously, there are the larger commitments, such as
retrofitting our homes, buying an electric car etc, but our day-to-day
activities also add up and, combined, can make a huge difference. As we
approach Christmas, could we remember the environment and buy
sustainable gifts, where appropriate; maybe buy fewer, better-quality
items (often more cost-effective in the long run), rather than large
numbers of cheaper, poorly made products. One doesn’t have to be a
“grinch” but wasting food and buying endless plastic toys or unwanted
clothes contribute hugely to global emissions. Ireland produces wonderful
food and gifts; if we support these companies, we not only contribute to
the local economy, but fewer air miles and, hopefully, less waste are
involved. May we all enjoy a “green” Christmas.

PREPARATION

OPENING PRAYER

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Amen.

A SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

Brethren, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a

roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist,

steadfast in the faith.                                                                                                   1 Peter 5: 8, 9.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES

But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Thanks be to God.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.

The Lord’s Name be praised.

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 44: 1-9

We have heard with our ears, O God, our forebears have told us, ♦︎

all that you did in their days, in time of old;

How with your hand you drove out nations and planted us in, ♦︎

and broke the power of peoples and set us free.

For not by their own sword did our ancestors take the land ♦︎

nor did their own arm save them,

But your right hand, your arm, and the light of your countenance, ♦︎

because you were gracious to them.

You are my King and my God, ♦︎

who commanded salvation for Jacob.

Through you we drove back our adversaries; ♦︎

through your name we trod down our foes.

For I did not trust in my bow; ♦︎

it was not my own sword that saved me;

It was you that saved us from our enemies ♦︎

and put our adversaries to shame.

We gloried in God all the day long, ♦︎

and were ever praising your name.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Luke 11: 29-32

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, ‘This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

The Gathering of God’s People

The Greeting

The Lord be with you.                                    And also with you.

Sentence

“You are my strength, Lord, I will love you; Under the shadow of your wings protect me”

The Prayers of Moucan, Welsh, eight century

Introduction

There are some hundreds of saints called Colman. The Colman who built the first church at Cloyne in Co. Cork was ordained late in life at the age of 50. He was influenced by Brendan the Navigator as he searched for his vocation. Brendan called him a column or a pillar of the church and also a dove.

Opening Prayer

Let us pray to God the Father, God the Son, and to God the Holy Spirit

whose infinite greatness enfolds the whole world,

in persons three and one, in essence simple and triune,

suspending the earth above the waters, hanging the upper air with stars,

that he may be favourable to sinners who righteously justifies all who err,

who ever-living lives. May God be blessed for ages. Amen.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Moucan, Welsh, eight century.

Penitence

O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who trust in him.

Lord, have mercy.            Lord, have mercy.

The Lord ransoms the lives of his servants and none who trust in him will be destroyed.

Christ, have mercy.         Christ, have mercy.

Come my children, listen to me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.            Lord, have mercy.

Collect

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship

in the mystical body of your Son, Christ our Lord:

Grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living

that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared

for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

The First Reading – Jeremiah 17: 7-10

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?

“I the Lord search the mind and try the heart, to give to everyone according to his ways,

according to the fruit of his doings.”

This is the Word of the Lord.                                       Thanks be to God

The Psalm – Psalm 34: 11-17

The Response – Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Come, my children, and listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

Who is there who delights in life and longs for days to enjoy good things?

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from lying words.

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their cry.

The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.

The righteous cry and the Lord hears them and delivers them out of all their troubles.

The Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 2: 6-13

Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him,” God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

For the spirit searches everything even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thought except the spirit of the person which is in them? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.

This is the Word of the Lord.                       Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reading – St John 16: 12-15

Jesus said, “I have yet many things to say to you but you cannot hear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.                                    Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Few thoughts

Canticle – The Song of Wisdom

Wisdom is the brightness of eternal light, the spotless mirror of God’s power at work, the image of God goodness.

Wisdom is but one yet she can do all things, herself unchanging, she makes all things new.

Age after age, she enters holy souls and makes them friends of God, and prophets, beloved of God as her companions.

Wisdom is more beautiful than the sun, surpassing every constellation of the stars.

Her radiance is greater than the light of day; for day’s light is followed by the night.

Against wisdom no evil can prevail; she reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other and orders all things well.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

We pray for the diocese of Cloyne, its bishop, clergy and people. We give thanks for those who have served in its cathedral and all its parishes, remembering among them the life of philosophical learning and virtuous living spend in the diocese for some twenty years as bishop by George Berkeley from 1734-1753.

Almighty God, you called your bishop – Colman to be a builder of churches in Cloyne, giving him such grace that he was known as a pillar of the church and a man of peace: Grant to all who search for their true vocation constancy in their seeking and ready obedience when they discover it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for the Church of God, the nations of the world, the local community, those in need and remembrance and thanksgiving for the faithful departed.

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven ……….

Dismissal and Blessing

God who in days of old gave to this land the benediction of his holy Church, fill you with his grace to walk faithfully in the steps of the saints and to bring forth fruit to his glory:

And the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen.
