MORNING PRAYER 1
THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Opening Hymn: CH553 “Jesu, lover of my soul”
Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to Thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high:
hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide;
O receive my soul at last.
Other refuge have I none,
hangs my helpless soul on Thee;

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1: 8, 9
Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.

A GENERAL CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have
followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have
left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to
have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare
thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we
may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

A LESSON
from the Old Testament
Jeremiah 31: 31-34
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

A LESSON
from the New Testament
Hebrews 5: 5-10
So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
‘You are my Son,
today I have begotten you’;
as he says also in another place,
‘You are a priest for ever,
according to the order of Melchizedek.’
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

A LESSON
from the Gospels
John 12: 20-33
Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from
Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and
Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I
tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.
‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I
have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will
glorify it again.’ The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to
him.’ Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the
ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He
said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

A Prayer for the President and all in authority
Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land,
that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to
all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness,
that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas
Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad.
As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People
Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all

GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Behold, now is the acceptable time;
now is the day of salvation.
Turn us again, O God of our salvation,
that the light of your face may shine on us.
May your justice shine like the sun;
and may the poor be lifted up.

PENITENCE
Silent prayer / reflection on the past day.
Loving God,
We remember in this season of Lent the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness,
the pressures he faced,
the choices he had to make,
the evil he had to resist,
the path he chose.
We remember that though he was tempted as we are
he did not give way,
though he could have used his powers for his own ends
he used them instead for us,
though he could have taken the easy way
he took the hard.
Loving God,
Forgive us that our testimony is all too often so different.
We have failed you in so much,
refusing to take up our cross
and follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
We have not obeyed your commandments,
or loved as you have loved us,
or in any way lived faithfully as your people.
We have been narrow in our vision,
weak in our commitment,
careless in our worship,

A READING
Mark 12: 18-27
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher,
Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow
and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no
children; and the second married her and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; none of the seven
left children. Last of all the woman herself died. In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had
married her.’
Jesus said to them, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power
of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in

and for his saving power to be manifest in our lives.

you refused to turn stones into bread.
Save us from using our power,
however little,
to satisfy the demands of selfishness
in the face of the greater needs of others.

you refused to leap from the temple top.
Save us from displaying our skills,
however modest,
to win instant popularity
in the face of nobler calls on our abilities.
Jesus the Christ,
you refused to bend the knee to a false god.
Save us from offering our devotion,
however weak,
to cheap or easy religion
in the face of the harder path
on which you bid us to follow you.

give us wisdom to discern evil,

THANKSGIVINGS
Gracious God,
we thank you that you are a God
who sees not the outside but the inside,
a God who is not taken in by external appearances
but who looks into the inner depths of our heart and soul.
We thank you for the reassurance which that brings,
the confidence we can have
that, though we repeatedly disobey you,
consistently breaking your commandments
and failing to live as you have called us to,
still you know that we earnestly desire to be your people,
that we long to be better disciples of Christ.
For your unfailing mercy,
receive our thanks.
We thank you that you see not merely the end product
but the initial intention,
not just the final results
but the desire that precedes it.
But we recognise also the challenge that truth brings,

INVITATION TO WORSHIP
On Mothering Sunday, many of us thank God for the women who have had the greatest impact on our
lives, and celebrate their unconditional love and sacrifice.
For others, however, Mothering Sunday brings mixed emotions, and it can take real tenacity and trust in
the Holy Spirit to give love and to feel loved.
So, in this service we remember before God families of all kinds, as they navigate the joys and challenges
of family life, and ask for his blessing upon them.
We draw near in worship to our heavenly Father, with full and thankful hearts, that we belong to his
family and are all equally loved by him. Amen.

Wherever we are, we live in God’s family.

The First Reading: 1 Samuel 1: 20-28
In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of
the Lord.’
The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his
vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring
him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a
nazirite for all time.’ Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Do what seems best to you, wait until you have
weaned him; only—may the Lord establish his word.’ So the woman remained and nursed her son, until
she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child
was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, ‘Oh, my lord!
As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For
this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him
to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.’
She left him there for the Lord.

The Second Reading: Colossians 3: 12-17
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive
each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with
love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of

beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your
mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

SERMON
THE COLLECT OF THE WORD
God of mercies,
your only Son, while hanging on the cross,
appointed Mary, his mother,
to be his beloved disciple’s mother.
May we follow her good example
and always care for others
for the sake of Jesus Christ
our Saviour through whose name we pray. Amen.

INTRODUCTION
Beloved in Christ,
we come together to offer to Almighty God
our worship and praise and thanksgiving,

The Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 18-25
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it
is the power of God. For it is written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made
foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through
wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews
demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God
and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is
stronger than human strength.

The Gospel: John 2: 13-22
The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling
cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove
all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of
here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal
for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’
Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This
temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was
speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he
had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

EXAMINING OURSELVES
Almighty and all-seeing God,
We thank you for this season of Lent –
a time to reflect upon our discipleship
to consider our calling,
to test ourselves and see whether we are in the faith.
Almighty God,
help us to face all those things
which we usually prefer to push aside –
the unpleasant truths we sweep under the carpet,
pretending they are not there.
All-seeing God,
we can fool ourselves
but we cannot fool you.
We can pretend all is well
but cannot conceal our inner pain.
We can deny our need of you
but cannot disguise our emptiness without you.
We can seek fulfilment in this world
but will never find real peace outside your love.
Almighty and all-seeing God,
we claim to be in the faith
but sometimes that faith is skin-deep.
We claim to love you
but often that love is flawed.
We claim to serve you
but all too frequently we serve self first.
Search us and help us to search ourselves,
control us, and help us to control ourselves,
and give us grace to grow strong in faith
and whole in Christ,

EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 3^rd March 2021

The Greeting

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Introduction

We have come together in the name of Christ

To offer our praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive God’s holy word,

to seek the forgiveness of our sins, and to pray for the needs of the world,

that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we may give ourselves to the service of God.

O Lord open our lips, and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the Lord, All praise to his name.

Blessed are you, Lord God of our salvation, to you be glory and praise for ever. In the darkness of our sin you have shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Open our eyes to acknowledge your presence, that freed from the misery of sin and shame, we may grow into your likeness from glory to glory.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.
