Evening Prayer

7  July, 2021.

 

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

 

Psalm 85:6,7,9-11,13

O God, will you not give us life again,

that your people may rejoice in you.

Show us your mercy, O Lord,

and grant us your salvation.

Truly, his salvation is near to those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth are met together,

righteousness and truth have kissed each other;

Truth shall spring up from the earth

and righteousness look down from heaven.

Righteousness shall go before him

and direct his steps in the way.

 

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

 

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

 

 

 

 

The word of God

St. John7:1-6

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were looking for an opportunity to kill him. Now the Jewish festival of Booths was near. So his brothers said to him, ‘Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing; for no one who wants to be widely known acts in secret. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.’ (For not even his brothers believed in him.) Jesus said to them, ‘My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil. Go to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival, for my time has not yet fully come.’ After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 104 v 24 – 36

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there,
living things both small and great.

26 There go the ships and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

PRAYERS – Let us pray:

For the Church and your people Lord, that they will serve you faithfully with humility, holiness and vision.

For our President and members of government and all world leaders,

that they will promote peace and justice, freedom and human well-being.

For those places in the world where food is scarce and poverty is common or life is dangerous, we pray that conditions will improve for all who struggle,

A Prayer for Peace in the Land of the Holy One

God of creation and of re-creation, we call on you for the gift of peace in these times of sorrow and of devastation in the Land of The Holy One.
We bring before you all those who suffer and all those who respond to their cry for compassion and understanding, for dignity and justice.
We pray for those who are injured and maimed, whose families are ripped apart and whose homes and livelihoods are gone. Our prayer and our hope, Lord God are for the sound of harmony and the voice of humanity. We ask in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

 

Common Collect

Lord Almighty, come and scatter the darkness of our hearts by the light of your presence: that we may know you, the Light of the world and the one true God, blessed this night and for evermore. Amen

The Service of Light

 

Candles are lit.

 

The Revd Ken Rue says

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

on this most holy night,

when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life,

the Church invites her children throughout the world

to come together in vigil and prayer.

This is the Passover of the Lord.

We remember his death and resurrection

by hearing his word and celebrating his mysteries,

confident that we shall share his victory over death

and live with him for ever in God.

 

The new fire is kindled.

 

Let us pray.

 

Eternal God,

who made this most holy night

to shine with the brightness of your one true light:

set us aflame with the fire of your love,

and bring us to the radiance of your heavenly glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

 

May the light of Christ, rising in glory,

banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.

Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels!

O Universe, dance around God’s throne!

Jesus Christ, our King, is risen!

Sound the victorious trumpet of salvation!

 

Rejoice, O earth, in glory, revealing the splendour of your creation,

radiant in the brightness of your triumphant King!

Christ has conquered! Now his life and glory fill you!

Darkness vanishes for ever!

 

Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory!

The risen Saviour, our Lord of life, shines upon you!

peace and justice find a home, and heaven is joined to earth

and all creation reconciled to you.

 

Therefore, heavenly Father, in this our Easter joy

accept our sacrifice of praise, your Church’s solemn offering.

Grant that this Easter Candle may make our darkness light.

 

For Christ the morning star has risen in glory;

Christ is risen from the dead and his flame of love still burns within us!

Christ sheds his peaceful light on all the world!

Christ lives and reigns for ever and ever! Amen.

The Vigil

 

INTRODUCTION TO VIGIL READINGS

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

let us now listen attentively to the word of God,

recalling how he saved his people throughout history,

and in the fullness of time,

sent his own Son to be our Redeemer.

Crossing the Red Sea

Exodus 14: 10-31; 15: 20-21

As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, ‘Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, “Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians”? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.’ But Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.’

 

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But you lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his chariot drivers. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his chariot drivers.’

 

The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued, and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, ‘Let us flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.’ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.’ So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

 

Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them:
‘Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.’

Dying and Rising with Christ

Romans 6: 3-11

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. On this holy night when Jesus Christ rose from the dead

and restored our life of grace

The Collect for Tuesday in Holy Week

O God, who by the passion of your blessed Son, made an instrument of shameful death, to be for us the means of life: grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer pain and loss for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ: who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever Amen.

Appeal for help.

Easter

My mother woke us that Sunday –

her voice a bell proclaiming spring.

We rose diving into our clothes, newly bought.

We took turns standing before mirrors,

combing, staring at our new selves.

Sinless from forty days of desert,

sinless from good confessions,

we drove to church in a red pickup,

bright and red and waxed for the special occasion.

Clean, polished as apples,

the yellow-dressed girls in front with Mom and Dad;

the boys in back, our hair blowing free in the warming wind.

Winter gone away.

At Mass, the choir singing loud:

ragged notes from ragged angel’s voices;

ancient hymns sung in crooked Latin.

The priest, white robed, raised his palms toward God,

opened his mouth in awe: “Alleluia!”

The unspoken word of Lent let loose in flight.

Alleluia and incense rising,

my mother wiping her tears from words she’d heard;

my brother and I whispering names of statues

lining the walls of the church.

Bells ringing, Mass ending,

we running to the truck, shiny as shoes going dancing.

Dad driving us to see my grandmother.

There, at her house, I asked about the new word I’d heard: resurrection. “Death, death,” she said, her hands moving downward,

“the cross – that is death.”

And then she laughed: “The dead will rise.”

Her upturned palms moved skyward as she spoke.

“The dead will rise.”

She moved her hands toward me,

wrapped my face with touches, and laughed again.

The dead will rise.

THE SUNDAY BEFORE ADVENT: THE KINGSHIP OF CHRIST

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full. Proverbs 19:17

A GENERAL CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have
followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have
left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to
have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare
thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we
may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

A LESSON
from the Old Testament
Ezekiel 34: 11-16, 20-24
For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their
flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to
which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and
gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of
Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the
mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.
Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep.
I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their
shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have
spoken.

A LESSON
from the Gospels
Matthew 25: 31-46
‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All
the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the
sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to
those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I
was in prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry
and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and
welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?”
And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Then he will say to those at his left hand, “You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.” Then they also will answer, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?” Then he will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’

BENEDICTUS
The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68-79
1 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

THE THIRD COLLECT For Grace
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day:
Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of
danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through

Let us with confidence present our prayers and supplications to the throne of grace. We pray for all those in positions
of power, that they may govern with wisdom and integrity, serving the needs of their people.
May your reign come.

We pray for the Church, the sign of your reign, that it may extend your welcome to people of every race and
background.
May your kingdom come.

We pray for Christians of every denomination, that together we may come to understand the royal priesthood you
bestowed on us in baptism.

Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land,
that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to
all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness,
that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas
Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad.
As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend
their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in
the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People
Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all
People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon
them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ.
