A READING

John 6: 25-35

When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’  Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

THE WORD OF GOD
A READING
St Mark 12:18-27
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came
to him and asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher,
Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a
wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow and
raise up children for his brother. There were seven
brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no
children; and the second married her and died, leaving
no children; and the third likewise; none of the seven left
children. Last of all the woman herself died. In the
resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had
married her.’
Jesus said to them, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong,
that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of
God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither
marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in
heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not
read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush,
how God said to him, “I am the God of Abraham, the
God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is God not of
the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.’

WEDNESDAY 26 AUGUST. EVENING PRAYER
GREETING
The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you
And also with you.
PREPARATION
We meet in the presence of God who knows our needs,
hears our cries, feels our pain, and heals our wounds.
Amen.
PENITENCE
Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the
darkness. Together, let us confess our sins.
Silence is kept
Let us admit to God the sin which always confronts us:
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have
wandered and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of
our own hearts. We have offended against your holy
laws. We have left undone those things that we ought
to have done; and we have done those things that we
ought not to have done; and there is no health in us.
But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us sinners. Spare
those who confess their faults. Restore those who are
penitent, according to your promises declared to
humankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O
most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may live a
disciplined, righteous and godly life, to the glory of
your holy name. Amen.
May the God of love and power forgive you and free you
from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit,

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever.
Amen.

A READING
St Matthew 23:27-32
‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you
are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look
beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead
and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look
righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy
and lawlessness. ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and
decorate the graves of the righteous, and you say, “If we
had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not
have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the
prophets.” Thus you testify against yourselves that you
are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Fill
up, then, the measure of your ancestors.

showing mercy and pity: Mercifully grant to us such a

PREPARATION
OPENING PRAYER
The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praise to your name, O Most High;
To herald your love in the morning,
your truth at the close of the day.
HYMN 63 vs. 1, 2, 4 and 6 (SAID)
All praise to thee, my God, this night,
for all the blessings of the light;
keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
beneath thine own almighty wings.
Forgive me, Lord, for this I pray,
the ill that I this day have done,
that with the world, myself, and thee
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
O may my soul on thee repose,
and may sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
sleep that shall me more vigorous make
to serve my God when I awake.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
A prayerful examination of the past day may be undertaken after which the following words of penitence are used
Holy and gracious God,
I confess that I have sinned against you this day.
Some of my sin I know –
the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed –
but some is known only to you.
In the name of Jesus Christ
I ask forgiveness.
Deliver and restore me, that I may rest in peace.
By the mercy of God
We are united with Jesus Christ,
in whom we are forgiven.
We rest now in the peace of Christ
and rise in the morning to serve.

A READING
Matthew 8: 1-13
When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a
leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, if you choose, you can make me
clean.’ He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’
Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, ‘See that you say nothing to anyone;
but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to
them.’
When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, ‘Lord, my
servant is lying at home paralysed, in terrible distress.’ And he said to him, ‘I will come and cure
him.’ The centurion answered, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only
speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers
under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my
slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who
followed him, ‘Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come
from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while
the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.’ And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go; let it be done for you according to your
faith.’ And the servant was healed in that hour.

THE WORD OF GOD
A READING
St Matthew 18:15-20
He ‘If another member of the church sins against you, go
and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If
the member listens to you, you have regained that
one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others
along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by
the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member
refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the
offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a
one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. Truly I tell
you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in
heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed
in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on
earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by
my Father in heaven. For where two or three are
gathered in my name, I am there among them.’

A READING
Matthew 15: 32-39
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been
with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they
might faint on the way.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so
great a crowd?’ Jesus asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ They said, ‘Seven, and a few small fish.’ Then
ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks
he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate
and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Those who had eaten were
four thousand men, besides women and children. After sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and
went to the region of Magadan.

THE WORD OF GOD
A READING
St Mark 4:30-34
He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom
of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a
mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the
smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it
grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and
puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can
make nests in its shade.’
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as
they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except
in parables, but he explained everything in private to his
disciples.

THE WORD OF GOD
PSALM
Psalm 63
Refrain: My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
1 O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you;
♦︎
my soul is athirst for you.
2 My flesh also faints for you,
♦︎
as in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.
3 So would I gaze upon you in your holy place,
♦︎
that I might behold your power and your glory.
4 Your loving
-kindness is better than life itself
♦︎
and so my lips shall praise you.
5 I will bless you as long as I live
♦︎
and lift up my hands in your name.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
6 My soul shall be satisfied, as with marrow and fatness,
♦︎
and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,
7 When I remember you upon my bed
♦︎
and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
8 For you have been my helper
♦︎
and under the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.
9 My soul clings to you;
♦︎
your right hand shall hold me fast.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
10 But those who seek my soul to destroy it
♦︎
shall go down to the depths of the earth;
11 Let them fall by the edge of the sword
♦︎
and become a portion for jackals.
12 But the king shall rejoice in God;
all those who swear by him shall be glad,
♦︎
for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,

is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
A READING
Mark 15: 40 – 16: 8
There were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the
mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when
he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph
of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom
of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead;
and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned
from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and
taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock.
He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw
where the body was laid.
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so
that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they
went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the
entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been
rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right
side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth,
who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his
disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So
they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to
anyone, for they were afraid.
