A Late Evening Office – St Peter’s Day – Wed 29^th June 2022

Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.                                                                 Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love, bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 138

¹ I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
² I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulness, for you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame.
³ When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.

⁴ May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed.

Reading – John 21 v 15 – 22 – Jesus Reinstates Peter

¹⁵ When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

¹⁶ Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

¹⁷ The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. ¹⁸ Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” ¹⁹ Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

²⁰ Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) ²¹ When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

²² Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

Saint Peter’s Day Collect

O ALMIGHTY God, who by thy Son Jesus Christ didst give to thy Apostle Saint Peter many excellent gifts, and commandedst him earnestly to feed thy flock: Make, we beseech thee, all Bishops and Pastors diligently to preach thy holy Word, and the people obediently to follow the same, that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray to the Lord with all our heart and with all our soul,

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Creed

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 96

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord and bless his name; tell out his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations and his wonders among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods.

For all the gods of the nations are but idols; it is the Lord who made the heavens.

Honour and majesty are before him; power and splendour are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; ascribe to the Lord honour and strength.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

Early summer puts on a glorious display of colour as plants burst vigorously into life. Grasses and wildflowers proliferate – given the chance. Lawns are frequently cut very regularly and very low, offering no refuge for insects or frogs, while wildflowers are deprived the chance of blooming and providing nectar and, later, seeds for insects and birds. Most gardens could support an unmown corner or edge. Paths mown through longer grass provide access to other parts of the garden and offer a beneficial alternative to vast expanses of bare lawn. In acknowledgement of our biodiversity crisis, tidy town groups, county councils etc. are veering away from “over tidiness” and are now mowing less often and creating wildflower patches. The latter are not to be confused with modern flower beds, but instead play host to native wildflowers that offer the best refuge and food supply for our beleaguered wildlife. The riot of colours, including pink clover, yellow buttercups, pink and purple vetches are uplifting to nature lovers. Let us all learn to appreciate the value and beauty of these unmown areas. Crucially, don’t use herbicides in your garden or along rural verges, both for the health of the environment and ourselves – “Roundup” residues are increasingly being recorded in human bodies.

This year’s Ecumenical Bible Week will be happening online. The programme consists of:

• Morning Prayer at 10pm on Tuesday 7 June organised by the Tallaght University Hospital Chaplaincy Team.
• Panel Discussion with New Irish from various ethnicities and nationalities about what the Holy Spirit is doing in their lives and communities on Wednesday 8 June at 7.30pm.
• A Symposium at 2pm on Thursday 9 June with presenters including Bishop Michael Burrows discussing how listening to the Word leads us to connect with those on the margins of society.
• Thinking Allowed at 7.30pm on Thursday 9pm with a panel of faith leaders including Archbishop Michael Jackson, Roman Catholic Archbishop Dermot Farrell and Amy Carey of the Solas Project. Panellists will speak about their personal visions of a New Pentecost.
• Sunday Worship from Inchicore Solid Rock Church led by Pastor Emmanuel Might. During this Ukrainian Priest Fr Vasyl Kornitsky will reflect on the readings.

Saturday morning bible studies take place in the Chester Beatty restaurant, at 9.30am. This is a joint venture with Ashford Roman Catholic parish.
