EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 25th August 2021

The Greeting

We come from scattered lives to meet with God, let us recognise his presence with us

(Silence)

As God’s people we have gathered here,       let us worship and pray together.

Introduction

Loving God we have come to worship you.

Help us to pray to you in faith, to sing your praise with gratitude

and to listen to your word with eagerness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Penitence

The gospel calls us to turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.

As we offer ourselves to him in penitence and faith,

we renew our confidence and trust in his mercy.

We have not always worshipped God, our creator,

Lord have mercy ,                          Lord have mercy,

We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour,

Christ have mercy ,                        Christ have mercy,

We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide,

Lord have mercy                            Lord have mercy

May Almighty God, who sent his Son into the world to save sinners,

bring you his pardon and peace, now and for ever.            Amen.

Psalm 11

In the Lord I take refuge.  How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain.
For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings
to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.

When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne.
He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them.

The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.
On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot.

For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle – Ecce Nunc

Come bless the Lord all you servants of the Lord,

you that by night stand in the house of the Lord .

Lift up your hands towards the holy place and bless the Lord,

may the Lord bless you from Zion, the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,                                                                                                                 as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading – John: 15  verses 16 – 25

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you,

Holy Spirit, Comforter,

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 36

1  Sin whispers to the wicked, in the depths of their heart; ♦︎

   there is no fear of God before their eyes.

2  They flatter themselves in their own eyes ♦︎

   that their abominable sin will not be found out.

3  The words of their mouth are unrighteous and full of deceit; ♦︎

   they have ceased to act wisely and to do good.

4  They think out mischief upon their beds

and have set themselves in no good way; ♦︎

   nor do they abhor that which is evil.

5  Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens ♦︎

   and your faithfulness to the clouds.

6  Your righteousness stands like the strong mountains,

your justice like the great deep; ♦︎

   you, Lord, shall save both man and beast.

7  How precious is your loving mercy, O God! ♦︎

   All mortal flesh shall take refuge

      under the shadow of your wings.

8  They shall be satisfied with the abundance of your house; ♦︎

   they shall drink from the river of your delights.

9  For with you is the well of life ♦︎

   and in your light shall we see light.

10  O continue your loving-kindness to those who know you ♦︎

   and your righteousness to those who are true of heart.

11  Let not the foot of pride come against me, ♦︎

   nor the hand of the ungodly thrust me away.

12  There are they fallen, all who work wickedness. ♦︎

   They are cast down and shall not be able to stand.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Mark 8: 14-21

Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, ‘Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.’ They said to one another, ‘It is because we have no bread.’ And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?’ They said to him, ‘Twelve.’ ‘And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?’ And they said to him, ‘Seven.’ Then he said to them, ‘Do you not yet understand?’

Opening Prayer

O Lord, we call to you; Come to us quickly    Hear us when we cry to you

Let our prayers rise before you like incense Let our lifted hands be like an evening sacrifice

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen

The Penitence.

Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts.

In his light let us examine ourselves and confess our sins.

All – Lord God, we have sinned against you;

we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent.

Have mercy on us according to your love.

Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.

Renew a right spirit within us and restore us to the joy of your salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Absolution – May the God of love bring us back to himself,

forgive us our sins and assure us of his eternal life

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Praise

Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe

To you be glory and praise for ever.

From the rising of the sun to its setting

your name is proclaimed in all the world

To you be glory and praise for ever

When the time has fully come

you sent the Sun of Righteousness

In him the fullness of your glory dwells.

To you be glory and praise for ever.

Psalm 20

May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;

may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests.

Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall but we rise up and stand firm.
Lord, give victory to the king! Answer us when we call!

 Amen

The Gospel Reading – John 6 v 35 – 41

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.

40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Few Thoughts

Musical reflection – Here is bread, here is wine.

Here is bread, here is wine, Christ is with us, He is with us,

break the bread, taste the wine, Christ is with us here.

Here is grace, here is peace, Christ is with us, He is with us,

Know his grace, find his peace, feast on Jesus here,

In this bread there is healing, in this cup there’s life for ever,

In this moment by the Spirit, Christ is with us here.

Here we are, joined in one, Christ is with us, he is with us,

We’ll proclaim till he comes, Jesus crucified.

In this bread there is healing, in this cup there’s life forever,

in this moment by the Spirit, Christ is with us here.

The Prayers

We pray to the Lord: in faith we pray.                       We pray to you our God

That the rest of this day may be holy, peaceful and full of your presence; in faith we pray.                                                                                   We pray to you our God

That the work we have done and the people we have met today may bring us closer to you; in faith we pray.                                                     We pray to you our God

That we may hear and respond to your call to peace and justice:

in faith we pray,                                                          We pray to you our God

That you will sustain the faith and the hope of those who are lonely, oppressed and anxious, in faith we pray                                                     We pray to you our God

That you will strengthen us in your service and fill our hearts with longing for your kingdom; in faith we pray.                                                   We pray to you our God

(Silent prayers for those known to us in near of God’s healing balm at the moment)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.  Amen.

God of mercy, you know us and love us and hear our prayer: keep us in the eternal fellowship of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen

Concluding Prayer and Blessing.

In darkness and in light, in trouble and in joy, help us, heavenly Father, to trust your love, to serve your purpose, and to praise your name and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always. Amen

Evening Prayer

4th August, 2021.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 57

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,

for my soul takes refuge in you;

in the shadow of your wings will I take refuge

until the storm of destruction has passed by.

I will call upon the Most High God,

the God who fulfils his purpose for me.

He will send from heaven and save me and rebuke those that would trample upon me;

God will send forth his love and his faithfulness.

I lie in the midst of lions,

people whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,

and your glory over all the earth.

They have laid a net for me feet;

my soul is pressed down;

they have dug a pit before me and will fall into it themselves.

My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready;

I will sing and give you praise.

Awake, my soul; awake, harp and lyre,

that I may awaken the dawn.

I will give you thanks, O Lord, among the peoples;

I will sing praise to you among the nations.

For your loving kindness is as high as the heavens,

and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,

and your glory over all the earth.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

The word of God

2 Peter 3:14-18

Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Address

Canticle: Magnificat

My soul doth magnify the Lord.

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.

He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel:

As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Setting by Herbert Brewer

Heritage Week

This year the church will not be open to visitors during Heritage Week. Instead a short documentary has been produced by Patricia Butler, Scott Golden and others. The video is based on Patricia’s book “Nun’s Cross Church and its Treasures” and will be advertised on the Heritage Week’s website. It will be posted on the Parish YouTube channel.

Glyphosate

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are used widely in herbicides in forestry, agriculture, verge ‘management’ along roadsides and in parks etc and in residential properties. GBHs are non-selective, broad-spectrum, highly effective and have been commonly used since the mid-1970s. Users are often told they are ‘inert’ once they hit the soil. One of the best-known herbicides of which glyphosate is the key ingredient is Roundup. Until recently, little evidence of its long-term impacts was available. In the US, a man who developed cancer after spraying Roundup for several years was the centre of a huge compensation claim. In British Columbia, GBHs have been used on a huge scale in the forestry industry. Recent research there has shown that residues have been found to persist for up to 12 years, particularly in root tissue; additionally, glyphosate persists in the soil. Understorey species are also affected. Although edible fruits contained lower levels than shoots and roots one year after treatment, concentrations in both raspberry and blueberry fruits were above levels fit for human consumption. Wicklow County Council has signed up to a biodiversity charter, yet it has sprayed many roadside verges over the past year; blackberry pickers beware. We would all be well-advised to reduce any unnecessary use of GBHS.

GREETING

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

cf 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

Let us praise and worship God who has called us together.

Let us celebrate God’s majesty,

and delight in the wonder of God’s love.

Together we shall confess our sins

and receive assurance that we are forgiven

As the scriptures are read,

we can allow God’s word to speak to us,

and ponder its meaning for our lives.

In our prayers, we give thanks for God’s goodness.

We pray for others as well as for ourselves,

and we offer our lives anew in Christ’s service.

All this we do,

because we believe in the presence among us

of our Saviour Jesus Christ,

and in the mighty power of the Holy Spirit.

ADORATION

Great is the Lord and worthy of all praise.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom,

thanksgiving and honour, power and might

be to our God for ever and ever!

CANTICLE: Great and Wonderful (said)                Revelation 15: 3,4 and 5: 13b

1   Great and wonderful are your deeds Lord God, the Almighty:

just and true are your ways O King of  the nations.

2   Who shall not revere and praise your name O Lord?

for you alone are holy.

3   All nations shall come and worship in your presence:

for your just dealings have been revealed.

4   To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

be praise and honour, glory and might,

for ever and ever. Amen.

CONFESSION

Here these words of scripture.

Love on another,

for love is of God,

and whoever loves is born of God and knows God.

Spirit of God, search our hearts.

Let us in silence remember our need for God’s forgiveness.

Silence

Let us confess our sins to God.

God of mercy,

we have sinned against you and against others.

We have sinned in what we have done,

and in what we have failed to do.

We are truly sorry.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for our sins,

Forgive us all that is past

and raise us to newness of life. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, who pardons all who truly repent,

forgive your sins, strengthen you by the Holy Spirit,

and keep you in life eternal;

through Jesu Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 111

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, ♦︎

in the company of the faithful and in the congregation.

The works of the Lord are great, ♦

sought out by all who delight in them.

His work is full of majesty and honour ♦︎

and his righteousness endures for ever.

He appointed a memorial for his marvellous deeds; ♦︎

the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.

He gave food to those who feared him; ♦︎

he is ever mindful of his covenant.

He showed his people the power of his works ♦︎

in giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of his hands are truth and justice; ♦︎

all his commandments are sure.

They stand fast for ever and ever; ♦︎

they are done in truth and equity.

He sent redemption to his people;

he commanded his covenant for ever; ♦︎

holy and awesome is his name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

a good understanding have those who live by it; ♦︎

his praise endures for ever.’

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Mark 6: 35-44

When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.’ But he answered them, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said to him, ‘Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?’ And he said to them, ‘How many loaves have you? Go and see.’ When they had found out, they said, ‘Five, and two fish.’ Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

Thanks be to God.

Silence for Meditation

Canticle: The Song of Isaiah                             Isaiah 12: 1-6 (said)

Surely God is my salvation;

I will trust, and will not be afraid.

for the Lord God is my strength and my might;

he has become my salvation.

With joy you will draw water from the wells of  salvation.

And you will say in that day:

Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;

Make known his deeds among the nations;

proclaim that his name is exalted.

Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;

let this be known in all the earth.

Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion,

for great in your midst is the Holy One of  Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A LATE EVENING OFFICE – Wednesday 21st July 2021

Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore.  Amen

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 115 – Praise of the Lord’s love and faithfulness.

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Why do the nations say, Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.
But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

All you Israelites, trust in the Lord — he is their help and shield.
10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord — he is their help and shield.
11 You who fear him, trust in the Lord — he is their help and shield.

12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us: He will bless his people Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron,13 he will bless those who fear the Lord — small and great alike.

14 May the Lord cause you to flourish, both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to mankind. 17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord, those who go down to the place of silence; 18 It is we who extol the Lord, both now and forevermore. Praise the Lord.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever, Amen.

Reading – Luke 15 1 – 7 – The Parable of the Lost Sheep

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Meditation.

Reflection – The King of Love my Shepherd is.  The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never, I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine for ever. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. And so through all the length of days, thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever.   Prayers – Let us pray to the Lord with all our heart and with all our soul.Lord have mercy

Let us pray for all Christian people, that they may live in love and truth.        Lord have mercy

Let us pray for all ministers of the Church, and for our brothers and sisters in Christ          Lord have mercy

Let us pray for peace throughout the world, and for all governments.                   Lord have mercy

Let us pray for our neighbours and for all our friends. Lord have mercy

Let us pray for those who hate us as we pray for those who love us.              Lord have mercy

Let us pray for refugees and prisoners, and for all who are exposed to the dangers of travel.                        Lord have mercy

Let us pray for all sick people, for the sorrowful and the dying.                         Lord have mercy

Let us pray for the abundance of the fruits of the earth, and that the poor and hungry may receive a just share.                                                                                                          Lord have mercy

Let us remember our brothers and sisters who have entered eternal rest.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

Let us continue praying in silence                             Silence is kept

Lord, in your mercy                              hear our prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Common Collect – Lord Almighty, come and scatter the darkness of our hearts by the light of your presence: that we may know you, the Light of the world and the one true God, blessed this night and for evermore. Amen

Blessing – May the Almighty and merciful God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us this night.  Amen.

Wednesday 14 July 2021: Evening Prayer

GREETING
Let us worship God.
O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
In everything make your requests known to God in prayer and petition with thanksgiving.
Philippians 4: 6

ADORATION
Blessed are you, Lord God, our Father, for ever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the
power, the glory and the victory and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and the earth is yours.
Yours is the Kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. And now we thank you, our
God, and praise your glorious name.

CONFESSION
Let us in silence examine ourselves before Almighty God.
After a period of silence the Minister says:
Let us humbly confess our sins.
Gracious God, our loving heavenly Father, we confess to you and in the sight of the whole company
of heaven that we have deeply sinned by what we have thought and said and done. We know our
transgression and our sin is ever before us. Hide your face from our sins, we pray and blot out our
iniquities.
Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world.
Have mercy on us.
You take away the sin of the world.
Receive our prayer.

HYMN CH560: “Alone with none but thee, my God” (adapted)
Alone with none but thee, my God,
I journey on my way:
what need I fear when thou art near,
O King of night and day?
More safe am I within thy hand,
than if a host should round me stand.
The child of God can fear no ill,
his chosen, dread no foe;
’tis not from chance our comfort springs,
thou art our trust, O King of kings.
My destined time is fixed by thee,
and death doth know his hour;
did warriors strong around me throng,
they could not stay his power:
No walls of stone can man defend
when thou thy messenger dost send.My life I yield to thy decree,
and bow to thy control
in peaceful calm, for from thine arm
no power can wrest my soul:
could earthly omens e’er appal
a man that heeds the heavenly call?
Attrib. Columba (c.520-597)

THE WORD OF GOD
Psalm 142
I cry aloud to the Lord; ♦︎
to the Lord I make my supplication.
I pour out my complaint before him ♦︎
and tell him of my trouble.
When my spirit faints within me, you know my path; ♦︎
in the way wherein I walk have they laid a snare for me.
I look to my right hand, and find no one who knows me; ♦︎
I have no place to flee to, and no one cares for my soul.
I cry out to you, O Lord, and say: ♦︎
‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.
‘Listen to my cry, for I am brought very low; ♦︎
save me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.
‘Bring my soul out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name; ♦︎
when you have dealt bountifully with me,
then shall the righteous gather around me.’
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.
Luke 7: 31-35
‘To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children
sitting in the market-place and calling to one another,
“We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not weep.”
For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, “He has a demon”; the
Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of taxcollectors and sinners!” Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children.’

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Let your gospel come to us not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit, and in great assurance;
that with humble, teachable, and obedient hearts we may receive what you have revealed and do always that
which you have commanded; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ADDRESS
Silence for Meditation

PRAYERS
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Let us pray.Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Our Father, who is in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
O Lord, show your mercy upon us;
and grant us your salvation.
O Lord, guide and defend our rulers;
and give them wisdom from above.
Endue your ministers with righteousness
and make your chosen people joyful.
O Lord, save your people
and bless your inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
because there is none other that rules the world,
but only you, O God.
O God, make clean our hearts within us;
and take not your Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Merciful God,
you have prepared for those who love you
such good things as pass our understanding:
Pour into our hearts such love toward you
that we, loving you above all things,
may obtain your promises,
which exceed all that we can desire;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANSGIVING
Almighty and everlasting God: we give thanks unto you,
the Lord of heaven and earth and the Giver of all good things.
We bless you for the many gifts which you in your loving-kindness
bestow upon us day by day, for your watchful care over us, your children,
and your faithfulness that never wavers.
But most of all we thank you for the gift of your Son, your only beloved, our Saviour.
We praise you for his holy incarnation, his perfect life on earth among mankind,
his precious sufferings and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension,
and his continuing intercession and rule at your right hand.
We thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit,
for his work of grace in your Church and in our hearts
and for the promise of everlasting life.Fill us with love for you, who first loved us and enable us to offer ourselves,
all that we are and all that we have, in your service:
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Visit the company of your people with your grace, O God,
and fill us with the confidence that comes from your presence,
that in all things we may set the light of your compassion before people.
Grant that no one who is hungry may go without food at our hands,
none who is naked without clothing,
none who is thirsty without water,
none who is lonely without company,
none who is frightened without encouragement,
none who is bereaved without comfort,
none who is oppressed without justice,
none who walks in darkness apart from you without the kindly light of your gospel.
Let us never, O God, disgrace the name by which we are called. Amen.
Almighty God, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ went about doing good,
and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people:
Continue, we pray you, that his gracious work among us.
Cheer and heal the sick;
to doctors and nurses grant skill, sympathy and patience;
and send down your blessing on all who labour to prevent suffering
and to forward the purposes of love;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Our gracious Father, we praise and magnify your name
for all your saints and martyrs, who have confessed you in their lives
and remained faithful unto death.
Grant us also to follow them as they have followed Christ,
and finally with them to inherit the kingdom prepared for all those
who have remained steadfast in faith and obedient to your commands,
through the enabling power of Jesus Christ your Son,
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all glory for ever. Amen.

Will you go forth to serve the Lord?
By the grace of God we will.
The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.

who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ,
the great Shepherd of the sheep,
by the blood of the eternal covenant,
make us perfect in all goodness, so that we may do his will,
and may he make of us what he would have us be,
through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever!
Amen
