Evening Prayer

7  July, 2021.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 85:6,7,9-11,13

O God, will you not give us life again,

that your people may rejoice in you.

Show us your mercy, O Lord,

and grant us your salvation.

Truly, his salvation is near to those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth are met together,

righteousness and truth have kissed each other;

Truth shall spring up from the earth

and righteousness look down from heaven.

Righteousness shall go before him

and direct his steps in the way.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

The word of God

St. John7:1-6

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were looking for an opportunity to kill him. Now the Jewish festival of Booths was near. So his brothers said to him, ‘Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing; for no one who wants to be widely known acts in secret. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.’ (For not even his brothers believed in him.) Jesus said to them, ‘My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil. Go to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival, for my time has not yet fully come.’ After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

Address

Canticle: Magnificat

My soul doth magnify the Lord.

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.

He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel:

As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Cleaning Products

A stroll along the cleaning aisles in a supermarket will reveal a staggering
array of different products, each with the aim of cleaning specific areas in
our homes or our bodies. Some of them have two attendant environmental
consequences attached: most are packaged in plastic while many are filled
with chemicals that can affect both our health and the receiving
environment. A glance at the contents can reveal a worrying number of
toxic ingredients. Bleach is particularly harmful as, once mixed with water
and washed down the drain, it can cause dioxins to be released, which are
carcinogenic. Initially, smaller niche-market shops started selling ecofriendly products but now some supermarkets do too, due to consumer
demand. Examples to reduce plastic include bamboo toothbrushes, soap
instead of shower gel, bars of shampoo soap and deodorant, washing
powder in cardboard boxes (as they used to be) and, most importantly,
buy fewer cleaning products. Our forebears used simpler cleaning agents,
that were kinder to both humans and the environment – soap and water;
white vinegar; bicarbonate of soda. The addition of lemon juice or essential
oils can add a pleasant smell.

Intern Deacon

Wicklow & Killiskey parishes look forward to welcoming Alexander Aquilla
Chisnall as an Intern Deacon, commencing in September 2021. Alistair is
marrying Hannah Moore in August in their home parish of Crinken. During
his final year of college he will spend time in the parishes assisting with
worship and experiencing parish life as an ordained minister. He will also
be writing a dissertation for his MTh degree. We pray that Alexander and
Hannah may be blessed by their time with us and prove a blessing to the
parishioners and clergy.

Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 67 – With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us
so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you.
May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity
and guide the nations of the earth.
May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you

The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Reading – Mark 9 v 14 – 29 – Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me”. So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer”

Meditation.

Reflection – Heal us, Emmanuel Heal us, Emmanuel! we are here, waiting to feel thy touch: Deep-wounded souls to thee repair, and Saviour, we are such. Our faith is feeble, we confess, we faintly trust thy Word: But wilt thou pity us the less? Be that far from Thee, Lord!  Remember him who once applied, with trembling for relief: “Lord, I believe” with tears he cried, “O help my unbelief!” She too, who touched Thee in the press, and healing virtue stole, Was answered “Daughter, go in peace; thy faith hath made thee whole”.  Like her, with hopes and fears we come, to touch Thee, if we may: Send us not despairing home, send none unhealed away.

Evening Prayer

23  June, 2021.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

I love you, O Lord my strength.

The Lord is my crag, my fortress and my deliverer.

In my distress I called upon the Lord

and cried out to my God for help.

He heard my voice in his temple

and my cry came to his ears.

He parted the heavens and came down

and thick darkness was under his feet.

He rode upon the cherubim and flew;

he came flying on the wings of the wind.

He made darkness his covering round about him,

dark waters and thick clouds his pavilion.

From the brightness of his presence, through the clouds

burst hailstones and coals of fire.

The Lord also thundered out of heaven;

the Most High uttered his voice with hailstones and coals of fire.

For you will save a lowly people

and bring down the high looks of the proud.

You also shall light my candle;

the Lord my God shall make my darkness to be bright.

As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried in the fire;

he is a shield to all who trust in him.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

The word of God

St. Mark 6:45-52

Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

When evening came, the boat was out on the lake, and he was alone on the land. When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the lake. He intended to pass them by. But when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’ Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 116

1    I love the Lord,

for he has heard the voice of my supplication;  ♦

because he inclined his ear to me

on the day I called to him.

2    The snares of death encompassed me;

the pains of hell took hold of me;  ♦

by grief and sorrow was I held.

3    Then I called upon the name of the Lord:  ♦

‘O Lord, I beg you, deliver my soul.’

4    Gracious is the Lord and righteous;  ♦

our God is full of compassion.

5    The Lord watches over the simple;  ♦

I was brought very low and he saved me.

6    Turn again to your rest, O my soul,  ♦

for the Lord has been gracious to you.

7    For you have delivered my soul from death,  ♦

my eyes from tears and my feet from falling.

8    I will walk before the Lord  ♦

in the land of the living.

9    I believed that I should perish

for I was sorely troubled;  ♦

and I said in my alarm,

‘Everyone is a liar.’

10  How shall I repay the Lord  ♦

for all the benefits he has given to me?

11  I will lift up the cup of salvation  ♦

and call upon the name of the Lord.

12  I will fulfil my vows to the Lord  ♦

in the presence of all his people.

13  Precious in the sight of the Lord  ♦

is the death of his faithful servants.

14  O Lord, I am your servant,  ♦

your servant, the child of your handmaid;

you have freed me from my bonds.

15  I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving  ♦

and call upon the name of the Lord.

16  I will fulfil my vows to the Lord  ♦

in the presence of all his people,

17  In the courts of the house of the Lord,  ♦

in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Alleluia.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Luke 6: 43-45

‘No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

Thanks be to you O Christ

For the many gifts you have bestowed on us, each day and night, each sea and land, each weather fair, each calm, each wild.

Each night may we remember your mercy given so gently and generously

Each thing we have received, from you it came; each thing for which we hope, from your love it will come; each thing we enjoy, it is of your bounty; each thing we ask, comes of your disposing.

The word of God

O God, as these words are read

in our hearts may we feel your presence.

St. John 12:20-26

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza

The recent situation in the Holy Land has put huge pressure on hospitals,
including Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza city which is run by our partners in the
Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. Dublin & Glendalough has previously
supported Al Ahli Hospital by raising funds to refurbish its on–call facilities
for staff and for solar panels. Now it is asking for donations to the hospital
over the next three weeks. While Anglicans represent only a tiny minority
of the population of Gaza, Al Ahli Hospital serves all people of Gaza city
without discrimination on religious, gender, social or political grounds.
the newly installed Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Most Revd
Hosam Naoum, appealed for support for the hospital. He said: “The
Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem is continuing its Christian mission of
bringing healing to the wounded, relief to those who have lost their homes
and livelihoods and comfort to those who mourn the loss of loved ones. Al
Ahli Hospital in Gaza has been on the frontlines of these relief efforts,
becoming a beacon of hope to those trying to remain alive under such dire
circumstances.” Archbishop Naoum said the hospital is in desperate need
of funds for fuel for its generators and to purchase emergency medicine
and supplies.
Dublin and Glendalough Council for Mission is coordinating the fundraising
drive for Al Ahli Hospital from May 24 to June 11. During that time
donations can be made securely by card via the Chris
